Adversity is sometimes hard upon a man; but for one man who can stand prosperity, there are a hundred that will stand adversity.

Every time I think that I'm getting old, and gradually going to the grave, something else happens.

I don't know anything about music. In my line you don't have to.

Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain't goin' away.

• "I ain't no saint, but I've tried never to do anything that would hurt my family or offend God...I figure all any kid needs is hope and the feeling he or she belongs. If I could do or say anything that would give some kid that feeling, I would believe I had contributed something to the world."
• "I believe in the Bible. I believe that all good things come from God. I don't believe I'd sing the way I do if God hadn't wanted me to."
• "Gospel music is the purest thing there is on this earth."
• "Rock and roll music, if you like it, if you feel it, you can't help but move to it. That's what happens to me. I can't help it."
• "Some people tap their feet, some people snap their fingers, and some people sway back and forth. I just sorta do ‘em all together, I guess."
• "The first time that I appeared on stage, it scared me to death. I really didn’t know what all the yelling was about. I didn’t realize that my body was moving. It’s a natural thing to me. So to the manager backstage I said ‘What’d I do? What’d I do?’ And he said 'Whatever it is, go back and do it again’." Interview 1972
• "Man, I was tame compared to what they do now. Are you kidding? I didn’t do anything but just jiggle." Press conference 1972
• "A live concert to me is exciting because of all the electricity that is generated in the crowd and on stage. It’s my favorite part of the business - live concerts." Press conference 1973

He was the greatest musical sensation of his age, a man whose velvet backed portrait would compete for wall space with paintings of Jesus in many an American household. And he would become the greatest political murderer of the twentieth century.
Born on 8 January 1935 in Tupelo, MS to Vernon and Gladys Presley, Elvis was raised throughout his young years in modest, if not deprived, circumstances. Influenced by the popular music of the 1940's and 1950's, and combining it with the gospel and blues music native to his region, Elvis developed a musical style and signature of his own, which he combined with an electrifying stage presence. Taking his talents on the road in the summer of 1954, he quickly rose to national attention. In January of 1956 he recorded, on the RCA label, his first hit, "Heartbreak Hotel". Within eight months he had completed his first movie: "Love Me Tender". And one short month later he made his famous television appearance on the popular Ed Sullivan Show.
In January of 1958 Elvis and his new bodyguard, Alan "Hog Ears" Fortas, trekked to New Orleans, LA to commence filming of "King Creole", which was based on Harold Robins' work "A Stone for Danny Fisher". While on location they were introduced to New Orleans notables Clay L. Shaw and David William Ferrie, both of whom would later play significant rôles in the JFK assassination. Shortly after completion of the film Elvis was drafted and inducted into the U.S.Army and sent to Fort Hood, TX for basic training. During this period he met and befriended Joseph "Diamond Joe" Esposita and Charles "Slewfoot, Hodge, both of whom would later be employed as his bodyguards and who would participate in the JFK assassination.
On 14 August 1956 Elvis' mother, Gladys, died and was buried in Memphis, TN. Elvis was crushed by this event, and returned to Fort Hood a shattered soul. But soon afterwards he attended a USO party on base and met Ruth Hyde Paine, who would become a substitute mother and life-long friend. Later in life he would ask her to befriend the needy Oswald family, and through her Lee Harvey Oswald would find employment at the Texas School Book Depository.
Elvis was transferred to Germany for active duty in September, and was joined by another bodyguard, Bobby Gene "The Dragon" West. But upon arrival Elvis also came to know his chief nemesis, Maj. Gen. Edwin Anderson Walker of the Twenty Fourth Infantry Division. Walker despised Elvis' fame, and was quoted as referring to Elvis as, "That hip swinging, hound dog face soldier". Humiliated by the comment, Elvis developed a burning hate for Walker that he would carry into civilian life.
Discharged in May of 1960 with the rank of Sergeant, Elvis returned to the life of a performer, first appearing on the "Frank Sinatra's Welcome Home Party for Elvis Presley" television special. Returning to his home in Memphis, Elvis continued his climb to the pinnacle of the entertainment industry. But his near psychotic hatred of Walker stayed with him. In May of 1961 he met the irresistible Ann-Margret, who was also under contract to record for RCA. But rather than seizing the opportunity to dally with one of America's most desirable women, Elvis spent their time together cursing Walker. As a result the frustrated Ann-Margret recommended that he consider hiring a professional assassin. This off-hand comment stayed with Elvis for the next two years. Finally in January of 1963 he contacted Ann-Margret while he was on location filming "Fun In Acapulco" and asked for her assistance in finding a hired gun. She suggested contacting the recently repatriated Oswald, who was then living in Fort Worth, TX. On his return flight from Mexico Elvis met with Oswald at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport and made the necessary arrangements. They agreed that the murder would take place in April of that year. But Oswald botched the job, and an unforgiving Elvis wrote off his incompetent assassin.
Elvis and Ann-Margret met again in July of 1963 during location filming of "Viva Las Vegas". But this time it was Ann-Margret who had murder on her mind. Recently informed by Howard Robard Hughes that the death of her spy-in-training, Marilyn Monroe, was a murder arranged by JFK, she both seduced and blackmailed Elvis into agreeing to assist in the assassination of the President, using her knowledge of the botched Walker murder as leverage. Elvis had no choice but to agree, and selecting Esposita, Hodge, West, and Fortas as co-conspirators and deciding to use Oswald as his "fall guy", proceeded to plot the deed.
Elvis kept the details of the assassination to himself for his entire life. Only one person outside of the conspiratorial cabal ever heard the details. On 21 December 1970 Elvis met with then President Richard Milhous Nixon, who was well known to have no love for the Kennedy clan. During their meeting Elvis divulged his rôle in the Kennedy assassination. Nixon kept Elvis' secret, and carried it with him to his grave.

Elvis Aaron Presley, in the humblest of circumstances, was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child. He and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1948, and Elvis graduated from Humes High School there in 1953.
Elvis’ musical influences were the pop and country music of the time, the gospel music he heard in church and at the all-night gospel sings he frequently attended, and the black R&B he absorbed on historic Beale Street as a Memphis teenager. In 1954, he began his singing career with the legendary Sun Records label in Memphis. In late 1955, his recording contract was sold to RCA Victor. By 1956, he was an international sensation. With a sound and style that uniquely combined his diverse musical influences and blurred and challenged the social and racial barriers of the time, he ushered in a whole new era of American music and popular culture.
He starred in 33 successful films, made history with his television appearances and specials, and knew great acclaim through his many, often record-breaking, live concert performances on tour and in Las Vegas. Globally, he has sold over one billion records, more than any other artist. His American sales have earned him gold, platinum or multi-platinum awards for 150 different albums and singles, far more than any other artist. Among his many awards and accolades were 14 Grammy nominations (3 wins) from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, which he received at age 36, and his being named One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970 by the United States Jaycees. Without any of the special privileges his celebrity status might have afforded him, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Army.
His talent, good looks, sensuality, charisma, and good humor endeared him to millions, as did the humility and human kindness he demonstrated throughout his life. Known the world over by his first name, he is regarded as one of the most important figures of twentieth century popular culture. Elvis died at his Memphis home, Graceland, on August 16, 1977.

Presley was born poor in Tupelo, Mississippi, the son of Vernon Elvis Presley and Gladys Love Smith Presley. He was raised both in Tupelo and later in Memphis, Tennessee, where his family moved when he was 13. He had a twin brother (Jesse Garon Presley) who died at birth. The young Elvis took up guitar at 11 and, after high school, worked at Precision Tool Company and then drove a truck for the Crown Electric Company.
Death and burial
He died at his palatial home Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee in 1977 and is now buried on its grounds. Originally buried at Forest Hill Cemetery, his tomb was eventually moved to Graceland after an attempted theft of his body. Numerous examinations of his death by medical personnel have not resulted in a final public cause of death; causes most often cited are polypharmacy (drug mixing) or heart disease exacerbated by his drug use. According to popular legend, however, Elvis did not die in 1977, and may continue to be alive

Elvis Presley spawned Rock and Roll interest in Europe, his name even known by people behind the then-Iron Curtain. In France, singer Johnny Hallyday copied Presley in the French language, becoming a huge star in that country. Presley paved the way for other American rockers whose records sold in Europe and who began to tour there. Teenagers around the world began copying his "Duck tail" hair style, and the demand for transistor radios exploded so much so that Sony went from a small Japanese telecommunications company making radios to a giant global conglomerate. And, through his new look with black slacks and loose open-necked shirts, he created a huge demand for new lines of clothing. Presley's influence created a generation of teenagers who, for the first time, became an economic powerhouse through their spending capacity. Also, there are a number of Elvis impersonators worldwide.
Enduring legacy
Now, more than 25 years after his death, Presley remains a foremost pop icon of the 20th century. His image, especially his trademark forelock, is instantly recognizable. He is still the gold standard against which modern notions of fame are measured. At least one modern recording artist, Elvis Costello, borrowed Presley's first name to help his fledgling career.
But all too often Elvis Presley's kitsch appeal and the industry which has grown up around it, chronicling his dietary and chemical predilections and the trappings of his celebrity, have tended to obscure the vibrant and vital music he made as a young man, the vocally-influential recordings of his later career, and the lasting influence both he and his music had on American popular culture. Connected with this is a continuing urban myth that Elvis is still alive. "Elvis sightings", in which Presley is reported to have been located (frequently in mundane and out-of-the-way places, such as a supermarket in South Dakota), are common events, and one of the staples of supermarket tabloids.
However, interest in his music returned during the buildup to the 2002 World Cup, when Nike used a remixed version of his "A Little Less Conversation" as the background music to a series of TV commercials featuring international soccer stars. The remix hit Number 1 in over 20 countries, including the United States. At about the same time, a compilation of Presley's US Number 1 hits, ELV1S 30 #1 Hits, was being prepared for release. "A Little Less Conversation" (remix version) was quickly added as the album's 31st track just before its release in October 2002. Nearly 50 years after Presley made his first hit record and 25 years after his death, ELV1S 30 #1 Hits reached number 1 on the charts.
Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, a list of 150 songs circulated on the Internet, purported to be from radio conglomerate Clear Channel Communications to its subsidiaries, with the recommendation that these songs be pulled from airplay (it was later revealed that the list was originally the work of a few specific station program directors, was not an official Clear Channel missive, and changed over time as it was distributed). Presley's "(You're the) Devil in Disguise" was on the list.
Among his many accomplishments, Elvis Presley is only one of two singers (Roy Orbison being the other) to ever have two Top 5 albums on the charts simultaneously. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1986), the Country Music Hall of Fame (1998), and the Gospel Music Hall of Fame (2001). In 1993, Presley's image appeared on a United States postage stamp.
Note: The Presley family, including Elvis, spelled his middle name "Aron" throughout his life, although Elvis is said to have considered changing it to "Aaron". His birth certificate and tombstone both read "Aaron."
