Introduction to the Rules of the Astral Plane and the first of these rules: Rule VII in which the astral plane is \u201cably synthesized.\u201d The first part of this rule is a brief review of the first six rules of magic, rules for the mental plane. The rules of the mental plane are synthesized into One Mental Process. In The Battleground of the Astral Plane <\/i>as this first section of the Rule is titled, <\/i>the content explicates how the desire body is active on the astral plane and what is required so a choice will be made for the right-hand path. This instruction is particularly important for those approaching the second initiation. We have this choice to either control the energies, consciously manipulated by the governing soul or be swept into activity by the elemental forces and our lower desires. This section of the Rule offers a strong hint regarding the dual forces. Another way to consider the choice: Do we purify, clean up and redeem the inheritance from the previous solar system and the moon chain or get overcome by those lower forces? Michael poses the question: How often when we are creating something do we operate on impulse rather than taking care to create the circumstances in which we intend to produce in cooperation with the Plan? The battlefield of Scorpio is presented and Libra: let choice be made while establishing equilibrium. We are to stand free on the astral plane and work on it as we do with the Protective Formula used in preparation for the dissipation of glamour. Continuing with the theme of potency and busy-ness of the astral plane it is made clear that desires produce chaos. These desires can extend into the potent desires to contact the master. It is a fight to disabuse ourselves of these glamours and illusions found on the astral plane. The profound instability of this plane is noted and difficulty orienting ourselves. Rare beauty can be found with its allure in the myriad of forms that we encounter. The challenge is to learn to read accurately the \u201cakashic records\u201d and not be trapped in psychism. The difference between force and energy as these impact us is defined. The Old Commentary advises holding the serpent\u2019s tail leading into the Hall of Wisdom as the sacrifice petals open. These reveal and loose the traps. We must use discrimination as we go forward with test after test in treading the razor-edged path through maya, glamour and illusion. Confirmed is our eventual success as the soul will call us to resist the pleasures and move forward along the path. The dark night of the soul will be experienced and there may be initial failure to achieve the highest goals, thus producing strife. One may succumb for a time to the glamour of ambition and self-interest, selfish sacrifice. Progress will be made by the dispelling of illusion at the third degree. Continuing in this commentary expanding on the plane of illusion and distortion and glamour we are reminded that Master DK wants to help us understand this plane as cloudy and misty, with dense fogs that prevent clarity, fostering constant mobility of forms, limiting consciousness with astral veils of distortion, of aspiration. Battling on the astral plane (the kurukshetra) is connected to Scorpio and the second initiation demanding of us that we overcome the majority of glamours to be found there. In this battle between the Moon and the Sun, Arjuna is the hero of the battle. Each of us is Arjuna in fighting this battle on the astral plane to defeat the personality and end the ancient authority of the personality. The astral plane presents the Waterloo for every aspirant. An emotional crisis comes and the disciple proves, as Scorpio demands, proof on the physical plane, not theoretically, but with wisdom and purity. We are using more of the first ray approach and a method of detachment either executive or psychological, that results in decisive action thus winning this great battle. Discrimination and psychological discernment are required involving the fifth ray and testifying to fitness for the second initiation. We are reminded that Humanity as an entity took the first initiation at the point of individualization when animal man entered a \u2018new kingdom.\u2019 The crisis of the World War presented the opportunity for Humanity as a whole to pass the second initiation and that baptism by fire is imminent. D.K. ends this section of Rule VII (The Battlefield) commenting on the dualities of light and darkness and the lesser dualities that play out as do hot and cold with the resulting climatic conditions. We are told again that balancing the pairs of opposites, conquering desire and establishing equilibrium to become the Path are required to end the control of the astral forces and find liberation. The second subject under Rule VII is being taken up, the Two Paths. This rule covers the Battleground and now the two paths facing the disciple and the Solar Angel who decided long ago which path to follow. The function and relation of the disciple on the astral plane as a plane of conflict and various types of sentiency is given. How this sentiency passes through three stages of consciousness is discussed in contrast to the physical plane, the plane of externalization and activity in densest matter and the mental plane where intellect works out as the reasoning principle. Disciples generally, due to a degree of refinement in the physical body and developed sensitivity in the astral vehicle, have a more potent astral nature and work under what Master D.K. calls \u201cgreat emotional strain.\u201d The feelings of the heart, Neptunian, producing a kind of mystical sensitivity that is on the astral plane, feeling the energy of the soul in the mystical consciousness. Aspirants must make every effort to conquer, signaling Scorpio and the warrior nature, the astral plane under the influence of the soul as victory always descends from above rather than coming from below. First the battle must be won by becoming aware of duality, the pairs of opposites, and using the power of intelligent intuitive response to the thought currents from the external environment. Impressions upon the mind using reasoning eventually result in recognition of the higher will. The spiritual will can rule the struggle over any selfish personal will. There is a kind of touching of higher planes producing a higher sentiency through Uranus with sudden realization or with Neptune \u2013 deep sensitive impression on the buddhic plane. [Note: previous solar system is a third ray system, the green system rather than second ray system – as is mistakenly mentioned in this commentary – is corrected at the start of the next commentary.] Master D.K. defines the left-hand path and descent into pure mind, embracing a former type of energy which characterized the first solar system. This confines one to the unprincipled domain and cuts off the path to life on the cosmic ethers. On the path of right activity, the disciple subordinates the personality working with the soul, utilizing consciousness with no ambition for selfish purposes. A vital power developed in silence is felt by the aspirant who turns from the path of form. The eye of vision becomes the third eye as discrimination and dispassion develop with the energy of Venus and Taurus resulting in a potency and clear vision. This makes right choice on the spiritual path possible. Both are required to move along the razor-edged, the \u2018noble middle\u2019 path of the Buddha. These paths meet in a centre of peace based in the area around the third eye and pineal gland, the place \u201cwhere land and water meet.\u201d There true discrimination and dispassion have been achieved. A point of balance is found prior to the choice being made between the vibrating poles (the highest head centre-Uranus and the base of the spine centre-Pluto). The high point has to do with spiritual inflowing tides. The central channel in the etheric body, the sushumna, is sometimes considered spirit. Both the probationer with courage and clear vision and the accepted disciple battle illusion. The soul, Arjuna, must win and the form must be utilized for redemption. The accepted disciple is also fighting the \u2018black forces\u2019 on behalf of the Elder Brothers and his group. Libra is always involved in choices. There is an ascent to gain perspective. Another type of choice is presented, rapid advancement or steady, slow progress. Some initiates must choose between staying with their group or spiritual advancement. The one who meditates being the soul, Arjuna, is guided by Krishna, the consciousness projected onto the personal field and as the aspirant relinquishes his point of view to the point of view of the soul on its own plane. Wherever there is duality there is a battle. The two paths and the forces upon those paths do battle with each other: the Divine Plan versus materialization. When the battle is won, the disciple becomes a white magician, an adjudicator between the polar opposites, a graduate of the school of magnetic response. The result is the bringing of order out of chaos. The point in the square produced by the cross rises to form a pyramid and the possibility of observation and control from an elevated point. Saturn, the Lord of Karma, when one fulfills one\u2019s karma, in the sign of balance enables the disciple to find freedom as an elder brother who is a master. To will is the monad, to know is the soul, to dare is the personality and to be silent is the elemental nature which may not protest against the plan. Desires are rightly oriented and the motive of all activity is love which correlates with the direction of the Divine Plan in this solar system of Love and on this planet which has the Second Ray of Love Wisdom as its soul ray. <\/span>With the idea of beginning Rule Eight<\/span>: Types of Astral Force with the reading of the Rule, a moment of reflection is called for to consider what we are truly involved with in this esoteric study. We are all fulfilling karma but not likely that we are fulfilling karma as in Lemuria and Atlantis at the time of the creation of the imbalance. Millions of people will be making the transition into the Kingdom of Souls and the Hall of Wisdom. The lives of relinquishment have been passed through, leading to the contemplative life and we can now go forth as true helpers and servers, practical and yet spiritually aligned. The Rules for White Magic are given in A Treatise on Cosmic Fire<\/i> and are terse and difficult to comprehend as the explanation in TCF is given for initiates and should be studied and augmented with this more detailed study offered by Master D.K. in this volume. Focus on alignment with the higher part of oneself and receive instruction from one\u2019s own soul, perfecting our technique of meditation to function in the causal body on the mental plane. The magical work begins in the magician\u2019s own life and when he makes of himself a new creation. He regenerates, transmutes, transforms and transfigures his personality. Our first work is to work on the astral plane. We should consider ourselves as average students otherwise we fall into pride and separativeness. The Rule is divided into three parts: astral elements and the resulting ebb and flow; dangers of the midway spot and its opportunities; and the place where magic is wrought. D.K. summarizes the previous rules. The heart, throat and eye are allied for triple service. When the astral plane is conquered, ending the ancient authority of the personality, the Agnisuryans or elementals of the astral plane are controlled and the astral plane becomes a field of service as is the case for Seed Groups: Trained Observers, Workers in the Field of Religion, and Psychologists. This marks the passage of the second initiation and the soul is released from the prison of the astral body. The three different stages in which this works out are given: for the probationer, the accepted disciple and the initiate. The battle takes place over many lives learning to be guided by the soul in the egoic lotus and maybe by the soul in the cosmic ethers. Yet there is a culminating life in which Arjuna obeying Krishna, the soul, chooses the way of light and all the vehicles become vehicles of light aligned with divine purpose as radiatory Vulcan burnishes the shield of Mars. Three types of substance constitute the astral plane, the force of selfish desire, the force of fear, and the force of sex attraction. These together produce the great Illusion of the astral plane but not in the largest possible sense. Any concrete, or finitude is an illusion. Millions in the world are affected by rampant desire as it builds up the individualized self. The act of will on the part of the aspirant related to the 4<\/span>th<\/sup><\/span> Law of the Soul, the Law of Repulse, produces rejection of selfish desire. This section deals in some detail with examples of the different ray types and how failure to choose the right-hand path descends onto the left-hand path and the factor of fear. The first ray person becoming the \u2018destroyer of souls\u201d \u2013 the second ray person becoming the \u201cdeluder of souls\u201d \u2013 the third ray person becoming the \u201cmanipulator of souls\u201d \u2013 the first group works through governments, the second through religions, psychology and misuse of the arts, and the last group, the largest in number, through money, business and commercial endeavours. These types of imprisonment are created by souls in incarnation. It all constitutes a prison. This program concludes on page 241 of A Treatise on White Magic<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now we begin to consider the third type of force: Sex Attraction. This pull from the physical plane demonstrating as an impulse, an involutionary energy and manifests as an attractive force, which is a high way of looking at the basis of sex attraction. The full realisation of self is the divine marriage between the soul and the personality. This physical urge unites male and female for procreation and cannot be left out of our consideration. It is not an appetite that must be fulfilled and has become perverted as a fulfillment of desire. In Atlantean days, following upon the Lemurian times when out of control, it became so warped and constitutes an imbalance. The force of mind must be used to counter what is the result of humanity being swept by perverted desire and ambition. The triple problem of sex, money and fear can be dealt with using the triple soul potencies: intelligence, love and will. Michael continues with the next set of instructions: Cyclic Ebb and Flow<\/i>. All Knowledge found on the atmic plane concerns cycles. Cycles of the Seven Rays and Planetary Cycles, lesser and greater processional cycles of the zodiac are part of the rhythmic work of creation proper for a seventh ray age. D.K. discusses the importance of the great cycle of light and dark which is part of humanity\u2019s daily movement and constitutes a problem for the aspirant who has conditioned the self to believe he must leave all dark places behind and live in a state of constant illumination. Even the Great Breath seems to take the externalized universe into a state of darkness. We must not despise the rhythms of duality given the three principles: the Boundless Immutable Principle, Duality, and finally that all are aspects of the Oversoul. The ebbs and flows of soul experience continue for many lives and series of lives as the various planes, subplanes and sub-sub planes until all three aspects are included in the incarnating life of the soul. There is time spent in the return process. The aspirant is increasingly in control of the direction of outgoing energy and can focus on various planes at will and is no longer swept out into incarnation without conscious purpose for service. Continuing the instructions on cyclic development for aspirants, Michael discusses how the more contemplative tendencies and ray types may not be interested in the outer realm of the senses. Balance is required to assure health and well-being of valued and cherished workers. Otherwise they can die from the lack of vitality. Artists, in particular, may suffer from depression and have a unique ability to establish a rapport with people. Appropriate astral responsiveness is required as part of this balance and achieving \u201cthe midway spot neither wet nor dry.\u201d The Law of Periodicity must be obeyed. There are two requirements to achieve \u201csetting the feet\u201d upon this spot: dis-identification with feelings and centering in the soul consciousness – fluctuations do not count as these are fluctuations of the form in its present condition; the soul in incarnation rather than the soul on its own plane, fluctuates and continues until identification as the soul on its own plane is the state and dynamic equilibrium achieved. Libra is involved. Any limitation is part of the sacrifice made in order to serve as the aspirant focuses the physical or vital body and brings the illumination and inspiration down into form by bringing sensitivity, emotions and feelings in alignment with the astral body of the Solar Logos. The cosmic astral body of Venus has been regenerated to allow buddhic energy to pass through. With the achievement of some soul consciousness, the flow of love and wisdom can flow into the astral body. The midway point is defined for each of the three levels: for the probationer, it is the emotional body and astral plane; for the disciple, the fourth subplane of the mental plane; and for the advanced disciple or initiate, it is the causal body, neither dry nor wet, and relates to fire. From this point, there comes realisation of service in fulfillment to some degree of the Divine Plan. Continuing the instructions related to the \u2018spot\u2019 neither dry nor wet, a spot of vital (etheric) importance according to the Tibetan as the point where land, water and air meet. The aspirant focuses or takes a stand at this point. The Tibetan expands and Michael made note that the etheric body in the coming age will be the field for the direction of force. This will be the plane of directed service and conscious service. Aquarius, Libra and Gemini will rule in this coming age and create balance in the chakric system of the etheric body. The midway spot, in the etheric body, will be the point from which the magician will direct the forces of the magical work. By bringing the consciousness of the soul plane, focussing and directing that with what is called \u201cplasticity and fluidity\u201d to play on the centres, it is similar to a musician playing the seven notes of the musical scale to begin the creative work. This requires both withdrawal and focussing on the plane of the soul consciousness and within the soul body itself, an extension of what we are as being. This is the fundamental law of magical work. Dangers of the midway spot are discussed. Oversensitivity on the one hand and materialism on the other can \u201cproduce violent instability\u201d and the solar plexus becomes involved. Thus many cautions are given by the Tibetan in his teachings regarding the \u201cpremature and uncontrolled\u201d inpouring of spiritual energy into the personality due to the danger of these energies stimulating the lower centres. Lower psychism can result and \u201cdeath by drowning\u201d when land (the Moon) and water (Neptune) meet. Higher chakras can also be overstimulated and produce additional problems. The true white magician functions on the mental plane, the plane of air and focusses in the jewel in the lotus. The place where land, water and air meet is the head centre. When the personality is lifted and the soul descends, the lives meet and merge and the magical work may commence. This is the plane of mind and fire. The magician must register impressions correctly and accurately in order to create the thoughtforms that will be received by the brain and can bring these \u201cvital airs\u201d in the brain cavity into photographic forms of the plan and purpose \u201cseen clearly\u201d and interpreted accurately. The soul will provide the image, and this will be reflected on the mind and be transferred by the ethers for dense physical plane expression. Air represents the Christ principle. This higher principle must control and dominate. Consciousness continues to grow and the veils are lifted with ever-wider and deeper penetration of the higher planes. There are three stages in the form-making process. First, from the jewel in the lotus, outside of the element of time and space, the soul consciousness stands and visions the completed work. Second, in the egoic lotus the impression then sweeps the mind into thoughtform making activity. The quality of the chitta or mind stuff if illumined, can produce the proper interpretation and response, congruent with its prototype. If not, the result will be imbalanced and incorrect, full of distortion. Meditation is the foundation of correct impression and of accurate response to egoic intent. The aspirant builds the vision of the perfected man and the lower nature is subordinated so that over time, the disciple appears as the ideal man, the true server on the physical plane, coordinating all towards this ideal image, making this image a reality by forcing conformity to the ideal. The third stage in the form-making process, the thoughtform created in the brain becomes a focussing point for the soul expression. Through the right eye the \u201cvital energy of the spirit can express itself.\u201d (The eyes open.) The throat centre expresses the soul or second aspect. (The voice proclaiming.) Then the hands through which the third aspect can work serve in helpfulness to deliver the creative energy. (The hands conferring.) The unique triangle of distribution is complete. These instructions were given or intended for aspirants in the Tibetan\u2019s group and originally sent out as lesson units. While Rule IX appears to be rather simple, the complexity of application of the rule must be noted. Purity of motive and right intention are possible through fire, the fire of mind. Balance of mind, knowledge and pure intention prevent the turning toward the left-hand path. The motive can, in no way, relate to personal desire. The sword is pure but the scabbard that holds the sword is not pure. Limitation of any kind implies impurity. True freedom and purity cannot be known until there is liberation from the causal body at the fourth initiation. We must realize the importance of sound and the mantrams used for the elimination of the dross. Absolute purity would relate to nothing in cosmos and is the province of the absolute itself. If we can achieve even a relative purity so that the higher divine impulses can work through us we are doing well. The goal is to achieve the 5<\/span>th<\/sup><\/span> initiation or Revelation to understand the kind of purity to be sought. Physical and emotional purity are the objective for the aspirant. Purity of motive must become the habit of mind as the masters are looking for those who have established and stabilized right habits of the three lower vehicles and are dependable instruments. In the time of world need, the habits of selflessness and self-sacrifice as taught by the Christ are demanded as well as group integrity. These spiritual habits: entire reorientation of the desire nature, high-mindedness, and soul consciousness being permanently established allow for the completion of the transmutation process. Thus, we become fit for the function of Transmitting the Purpose through white magical work. D.K. offers encouragement as the time is right for true spiritual progress. The charge is to inspire all to work on group integrity, and to recognize co-workers wherever they may be found and to bring all into closer rapport with each other, the second, third and fourth degree initiates of the New Group of World Servers in particular. They are exemplified by their self-forgetfulness – 1<\/span>st<\/sup><\/span> aspect, harmlessness – 2<\/span>nd<\/sup><\/span> aspect and right activity – 3<\/span>rd<\/sup><\/span> aspect. We should ask ourselves as workers and as students: Are we sensitive to the plan for humanity? Are we able to recognize principles, a first ray factor, foundational to the plan? Can we overlook those non-essentials and put \u2018first things first\u2019? Discrimination is necessary. Can we bypass personal ambition and personal interests? A significant sacrifice. We must look right through the personal to find the essence and build group integrity. How do we measure up to the requirements? A reminder of the value of linking up with this larger, growing group, the New Group of World Servers, with the 5 o\u2019clock mantram or Mantram of the Disciple, while focussing in the head centre. It is important to memorize this mantram and use it in order to identify with the group, stabilize as an individual and manage the dual life as outer environmental factors can impact progress. Moving into the section of the rule: Fundamental Forms it is noted that though this rule appears very simple, it is describing the method of creation. The first of the four forms in the fourth kingdom of nature, The Form of Personality is defined with its vibratory frequency actually set in the previous life. The changes in vibration increasing the shattering or building of forms. We come in vibratorily with what we left in the out-going of the last incarnation. A newer and better vehicle is built as the man moves forward along the path. Though beginning with mistakes, one learns to work from within and achieving transmutation: from above to below. Continuing with the Fundamental Forms, the Form of the Environment is considered. Isolation along the arc of spiritual progress and the registering of the dark night of the soul, registered at each point along the way produces a period of aloneness when the cross is overturned. At the release of the initiate through the dark and narrow tunnel, we become brothers of the rosy cross and fully fledged as members of hierarchy. For the initiate of the 4th degree, in this complete isolation, Vulcan is prominent. Vulcan was cast out of heaven by his mother. When the initiate establishes satisfaction with the environment, note carefully the harmonies and the frictions, ill-at-ease is an indication of the need for spiritual will and a positive thrust to move forward to greater usefulness. Considered next is the unusual phrase, the Form of the Devotee, whether or not we are possessed of the 6th ray we do have our devotion, so pause and consider the question: What is your devotion? In the unfolding of the egoic lotus, we will understand the nature of the object to which we are devoted. Is it found in the Hall of Ignorance, the Hall of Learning or the Hall of Wisdom? What does one strive to acquire, is it physical, emotional, or mental? How are we spending our energy on the objects of our devotion? The Form of Devotion can be deceptively \u2018high\u2019 \u2013 the nature of which creates a relationship and there is always an object, concrete or subtle. Finally, the Form of the Causal Body is considered. This fourth form is located on the fourth of the cosmic ethers from the point of view of the Planetary Logos. The higher mind can in one way be considered an etheric field in relation to the Planetary Logos. The causal body found on subplane three and subplane two, which is not the highest consciousness but higher than the personality, the temple of the indwelling god, the jewel in the lotus, the monad in extension, the contents of which is transferred into the triad at the 4th initiation. The \u201cmasterpiece\u201d is lost, the beauty lost at the point of destruction of this form with complete elimination of all debris at the 5th initiation.
