Important Foundational Relationships

Aries
In Comparison With
Scorpio
1.   The Ram, the Scapegoat   1.   The Scorpion, the Eagle
2.   Esoteric Mantram: I come forth and from the plane of mind, I rule.   2.   Esoteric Mantram: Warrior I am, and from the battle I emerge triumphant.
3.   Exoteric/Evolutionary Mantram: And the Word said: Let form again be sought.   3.   Exoteric/Evolutionary Mantram: And the Word said: Let Maya flourish and deception rule.
4.   Quality of Light: The Light of Life Itself   4.   Quality of Light: The Light of Day
5.   Element: Fire Sign   5.   Element: Water Sign
6.   Cardinal Cross   6.   Fixed Cross
7.   Transmits R1 and R7 constellationally   7.   Transmits R4 constellationally. Possibly R1 is a subtle constellational transmission.
8.   Secondarily, (assuredly, but not exclusively), Aries transmits R6, R4 and R7 through Mars, Mercury and Uranus—its three planetary rulers on three levels—exoteric, esoteric and hierarchical.   8.   Secondarily, (assuredly, but not exclusively) Scorpio transmits R6, R1 and R4 through Mars, Pluto and Mercury—its three planetary rulers on three levels—exoteric, esoteric and hierarchical.
9.   Color: carmine, scarlet red   9.   Color: crimson, dark red. Black is important.
10.   Creative Hierarchy number II (unmanifested), characterized by the “Unity thro’ Effort”   10.   Creative Hierarchy number IX (manifested), the Human Hierarchy, the “Initiates”
11.   Associated with the inaugural first, the blinding, surmounting third, the revelatory fifth and the resurrecting seventh initiations, but especially with the third (EA 388-389) and seventh (EA 304) initiations—transfiguration and resurrection. The exalted Sun in Aries can be understood as relating to each of these initiations.   11.   Associated with the body-transmuting, appetite-regulating, first initiation; the purifying, emotion-transforming, desire-subduing second initiation; and the mind-transfiguring, personality-conquering third initiation. Scorpio prepares “the disciple for the first, second and third initiations. After the third initiation, its peculiar testing potency is no longer felt.” (EA 199) Even so, the fourth degree is ruled by the fourth ray, and bring buddhi powerfully into the life, as does fourth-ray Scorpio, powerfully resonant to the buddhic plane.
12.  Correlated to the synthesizing crown center and the ajna center—considered as the center of personality direction. Also influencing the impulsive solar plexus and the propagative center of sexuality—the sacral center, in relation to which, the opposites are brought together. The fertility of the Ram suggests the sacral association. Some connection with the based of the spine center is also possible, as Mars and Mercury (Aries’ first two rulers) rule kundalini “latent” and “in intelligent activity” respectively. Its hierarchical ruler, Uranus, transmits the seventh ray and is, thus, numerically related to this seventh (lowest) center.   12.   Scorpio is correlated principally to the three sub-diaphragmatic centers, sub-ruled by Mars and Pluto: to the attracting and repelling, desiring, aspiring, solar plexus center; to the instinctually insistent, sexually-unitive sacral center; to the system-empowering, hindrance-destroying, will-impelling center at the base of the spine. Because the ajna center is ruled by fourth ray Mercury (from a point in time near the third initiation and following), and because Mercury is the hierarchical ruler of fourth ray Scorpio, Scorpio can be reasonably associated as an influence upon the drama of contrasting polarities staged in relation to the ajna center.
13.  The zodiacal signs influence the Monad of every human being (EA 411, 637, TCF 1191); the influence from Aries impels the Monad forth upon its aeonial pilgrimage. The sense of pure selfhood which characterizes monadic awareness is enhanced by Aries. Further, Aries endows the Monad with its inherent omnipotence relative to the human energy system.   13.   The zodiacal signs influence the Monad of every human being (EA 411, 637, TCF 1191); the influence from Scorpio is potent indeed, because the entire fourth manifested Creative Hierarchy (the Hierarchy of Human Monads) is ruled by Scorpio. Scorpio guarantees that the Monad will not remain trapped in immersion, but will conquer its apparent captor (lower matter), and, thus, achieve its proper function in relation to the buddhic plane as the mediating kingdom between the three higher and three lower manifested Creative Hierarchies.
14.  Within the Triad—associated principally with atma, the spiritual will as it reflects divine will and law. Aries is also associated with the birth of ideas in buddhi (or at least their reception from the buddhic realm) and also with their abstract formulation within the sphere of higher manas.   14.   In relation to the Triad—Scorpio (the sign in which that great exemplar of the first ray, Hercules, achieved his triumph) must be understood as having an influence  upon the first aspect of the Triad—atma, the spiritual will. Scorpio (esoterically during this world period) may well transmit the first ray. In Scorpio, the threefold Illusion is conquered, and, buddhi (the intuition) is the conqueror. Buddhi rules upon the fourth plane, and Scorpio transmits the fourth ray constellationally. Scorpio seems less related to higher manas, though it is a triple sign.
15.  In relation to the Solar Angel, and the soul-consciousness (and causal body) through which it expresses—Aries governs the persistent will-to-incarnate “Let form again be sought”, and the first impulses (emanating from the plane of mind) towards descent onto the physical plane. Aries—is connected with soul intention, the vibratory activity of which (under impulse from the Monad) initiates the successive involutionary periods which produce appearance upon the physical plane.) (EA 302)   15.   In relation to the Solar Angel, and the soul-consciousness (and causal body) through which it expresses—Scorpio can be understood as the will of the Solar Angel to drastically purify its personality, when that personality has, at length, demonstrated its readiness for the process. Under Virgo, the personality has been consistently improved; under Scorpio, the Solar Angel (“a most efficient surgeon”—(DINA I 232)) reveals all obstruction to soul-infusion, and (with the help of its now desperate personality) sees to the removal of such obstruction.
16.  Within the Personality—Aries can be identified with the ruling and assertive qualities of the mental nature; with the impulses and passions of the astral nature; with the forceful but irregular vigor of the etheric nature; and, generally, with the muscular strength of the dense physical nature. Aries is especially related to the lower mental vehicle. (EA 92) (The vehicular focus and its degree of prominence, depends upon the stage of evolutionary development.)   16.   Within the Personality—Scorpio can be identified with the penetrative and controlling (EA 180) processes of the lower mental nature; with the intensely purgative and emotionally transformational processes of the astral nature; with the general power of the etheric nature (though emotional/mental battles can be devitalizing); and with the fortitude, hardiness and staying-power of the dense physical nature. (The vehicular focus and its degree of prominence, depends upon the stage of evolutionary development.)
17.   Stage within a Preliminary Fourfold Meditative Process: Conception   17.   Stage of Meditative Consciousness: Illumination. “Scorpio—Illumination—The soul triumphs. Experience in Taurus consummated. Astral glamour dissipated. Soul light pours in. The Path of Discipleship. The Disciple.” (EA 228-229)
18.   The Crisis of Orientation characterized by the quality/process of Reversal. (EA 472)   18.   The Crisis of the Battlefield, characterized by the quality/process of Conflict.

Aries

Scorpio
1.  Expressive, principally, of the first or will aspect of divinity. “Aries is the focal point of the expression of the first aspect of divinity, the will aspect.” (EA 194)Some third aspect may enter in relation to activity and , depending upon whether the seventh ray is interpreted in terms of the first or third rays.   1.   Expressive of the first aspect as it seeks to transmute the third aspect so that the second aspect may emerge—“triumphant”.
2.   Cosmically, associated primarily with the Great Bear: “Aries is, as might be expected, closely connected with the Great Bear, but peculiarly so with one of the stars called The Pointers;….” (EA 195) “The Great Bear—Aries—Pluto—Shamballa.” (EA 416) “AriesLibra—The Sun (which are an expression of the Great Bear) bring about that focussing of energy in the life of the disciple which makes it possible for him to function consciously and with intention upon the Path of Initiation.” (EA 466) “Aries, the initiator of impulses (either the impulse to incarnate or the impulse to return to the originating source) is closely in touch with one of the stars in the Great Bear to which we give the name "Pointer" in common parlance. This Pointer is a "major star of direction" because through it (in this world cycle) flows the will to unify and to bring about synthesis.” (EA 482)   2.   Cosmically, associated primarily with Sirius. “Scorpio is under the influence or inflowing energy of Sirius. This is the great star of initiation our Hierarchy (an expression of the second aspect of divinity) is under the supervision or spiritual magnetic control of the Hierarchy of Sirius.” (EA 197) Initiation (Sirius) is transformation (Scorpio) “Scorpio is the great constellation which influences the turning point both in the life of humanity and the life of the individual human being. For the first time in the history of both mankind and disciples the energy of Sirius, pouring into the seven groups which form our planetary Hierarchy evokes a response.” (EA 198) “We come now to another triangle, the activity of which produces the manifestation of Hierarchy—the intermediary between Shamballa and Humanity: Scorpio, Sirius and Mars. These, in relation to our Earth, produce the four streams of energy (initiating and transmitting) which lead humanity towards discipleship and initiation.” (EA 483)
3.   Three Constellations Connected with Aries: a) Cassiopeia—the Enthroned Queen; b) Cetus—the Sea Monster; c) Perseus—the One Who Subdues (cf. LOH 35-36)   3.   Three Constellations Connected with Scorpio: a) Serpens—the Serpent of Illusion; b) Ophiuchus—the Serpent Handler or Wrestler; c) Hercules—the Sun God/Hero (LOH 153-154)

1.   Mars is exoteric ruler of Aries.
1.   Mars is exoteric and esoteric ruler of Scorpio.
2.   Mercury is esoteric ruler of Aries.   2.   Mercury is the hierarchical ruler of Scorpio.
3.   Uranus is the hierarchical ruler of Aries.   3.   Uranus is exalted in Scorpio.
4.   Aries transmits the first ray constellationally   4.   Pluto, the special ruler of Aries, transmits the first ray, as Scorpio itself may well do—constellationally.

Subtle Relationships Between Rays, Zodiacal and Planetary Energies

Subtle Relationships Between Rays,
Zodiacal and Planetary Energies

Aries
In Comparison With
Scorpio
1.   Aries transmits the first ray constellationally. Aries is also the first sign of the zodiac on both the reversed and clockwise wheels, and on the wheel which numbers the signs by polarity (Aries-Libra, Taurus-Scorpio, etc.) All this reinforces the association of Aries with the first ray.   1.   Scorpio (as its close connection with Hercules implies) is strongly related to the first ray as a constellation as a cosmic decanate. (cf. EA 204, 486-487). This first ray association may emerge more definitely in a future world period.  Mars, the exoteric and esoteric ruler of Scorpio, transmits the first ray, because its “School” trains “those whose work is along the lines of the destroyer.” (TCF 1179). It is the first ray which is the Ray of the Destroyer. Pluto, a special ruler in Scorpio, is the “Lord of Death” and transmits the first ray. Uranus, exalted in Scorpio, is the “home of fire electric” and transmits the first ray, almost certainly monadically. (TCF 1154)
2.   Aries transmits the seventh ray constellationally.   2.   Uranus, exalted in Scorpio, transmits the seventh ray
3.   Counting from Pisces clockwise, Aries becomes the twelfth sign, and is thus numerically resonant with the number three and with the third ray. “Let form again be sought.” Aries plunges into the material world at the outset of every new cycle.   3.   Scorpio (like Virgo) is a triple sign, hence related to the third aspect (which it conquers) and to the third ray. Mars participates in the expression of a great third ray Entity (EPII 99) ; Pluto is related to the third ray through stealth and stratagem; Mercury is strongly related to the third ray and may well transmit it via the personality. (EA 280) Uranus, exalted in Scorpio, expresses the third ray. (EA 138, 200)
4.   Mars, the exoteric ruler of Aries, transmits the sixth ray.   4.   Scorpio is the sixth sign of the zodiac on the ordinary (clock-wise) wheel, and hence has numerical affinity with the sixth ray. Mars, the exoteric and esoteric ruler,  transmits the sixth ray. Pluto, special ruler, has solar plexus associations (EA 78), hence, sixth ray associations.
5.   Mars also transmits the first ray, because its “School” trains “those whose work is along the lines of the destroyer.” (TCF 1179). It is the first ray which is the Ray of the Destroyer.   5.   See #1 above.
6.   Mars manifests as the astral body of a great third ray Entity and, hence, is aligned with the transmission of the third ray. The physical body of Mars must be more the third than seventh ray. (EPII 99)   6.   See #3 above.
7.   Mars is closely associated with the fifth ray, because it governs the five senses and rules science. (EA 215)   7.   Scorpio is the fifth  sign of the zodiac on the clockwise wheel—numbering from Pisces as one.  This gives Scorpio numerical affinity with the fifth ray.. Mars expresses the fifth ray in its relation to science and the five senses. (EA 215) Uranus has strong fifth ray associations through “exoteric science.” (EA 149)
8.   Mercury, the esoteric ruler of Aries, transmits the fourth ray.   8.   Scorpio transmits the fourth ray, constellationally. Counting by polarities (Aries-Libra-Scorpio-Taurus-etc., ), Scorpio is the fourth sign, hence resonant with the fourth ray. Mercury, the hierarchical ruler of Scorpio, transmits the fourth ray. Mars also seems to be associated with the lower part of the fourth ray—the conflict side. (Note the frequent Mars/Mercury associations, as, for instance, related to kundalini.
9.   Mercury, the esoteric ruler of Aries, has a strong affinity with third ray, just as has the Moon. (cf. EA 280). Mars, the exoteric ruler of Aries, participates in the expression of a great third ray Entity   9.   See #3 above.
10.   Mercury, the esoteric ruler of Aries, possibly transmits the fifth ray monadically (as Lord of Manas). Further, Mercury rules the fifth race and is connected with the fifth scheme and the fifth round.   10.   See #7 above.
11.   Uranus, the hierarchical ruler of Aries, transmits the seventh ray, probably as its soul ray.   11.   See #2 above.
12.   Uranus, the hierarchical ruler of Aries, the first sign,  transmits the first ray monadically. (EPI 421)   12.   See #1 above.
13.   . Uranus, the hierarchical ruler of Aries, is closely connected to the third ray which is probably transmits as the personality ray. (cf. EA 200, 238)   13.   See #3 above.
14.   Uranus stands for “exoteric science” which is on the fifth ray (EA 149)   14.   See #7 above.
15.   Uranus stands in a line of transmission along the second ray from Sirius and Pisces (EA 432). Further, Uranus participates, probably as the mental body, in the expression of a great second ray Entity. (EPII 99)   15.   Uranus, the planet exalted in Scorpio, answers to Uranus and is in line with a great second ray transmission of force from Sirius, and is also one of three planets (Uranus, Jupiter and Venus) which probably participate in the expression of a great second ray Entity (EPII 99)
16.   The Sun, exalted in Aries, is the veiling transmitter of the second ray, and, as a star, transmits the second ray in its own right   16.   See #15 immediately above.
17.   Vulcan often substitutes for the Sun, and the Sun is exalted in Aries. Vulcan is related to the “heart of the sun”, and hence, in some mysterious way, to the second ray. (EA 393)   17.   See #15 immediately above.

Similarities and Points of Cooperation Between the Influences

Similarities and Points of Cooperation
Between the Influences of the Aries and Scorpio

There are many similarities between the signs Aries and Scorpio:

both are keenly associated with Mars the planet of war and Mercury the planet of mentality.

Both are signs of power, warfare, strife and victory.

Aries conducts the battle in a manner more external and Scorpio in a manner more subjective.

Aries wages the battle between Spirit and Matter, Scorpio especially between Soul and personality.

Both signs, via Mars, are associated with the blood stream.

Both have a strong relationship to Pluto and hence are signs of death but they are signs essentially of death unto life.

Both signs are intimately related with the concept of the resurrection, the triumph over death.

Aries represents the fully liberated Christ life absolutely free in every respect.

Scorpio represents the triumphant Christ life emerging from its dark and earnest battle with the lunar forces.

Because of the shared rulership of Mars, both are signs of mortal combat and the shared rulership of Mercury suggests that these are signs of illumination, for Mercury rules Aries esoterically and Scorpio Hierarchically.

Although Scorpio has a strongly emotional bias, both of these signs are capable of sharply focussed intellect.

Aries represents the intellect as a fully creative agent, as architect of manifestation and Scorpio represents the intellect as that which liberates from the thraldom of lunar life thus bringing about de-glamorization.

Both have extraordinary tenacity.

Both are signs of ending and beginning: Aries ends the cycle of twelve-fold development initiating it anew and Scorpio ends the cycle of lunar personality domination and initiates the transformed consciousness into the cycle of soul unfoldment.

Both signs are also associated with the planet of transformation Uranus, Aries as Uranus is its Hierarchical ruler and Scorpio as Uranus is exalted in this sign. Uranus is always associated with the new and the better, thus adding further confirmation to the concept that these are signs of commencement.

Aries rules the renewed turning of the wheel whether into matter or in opposition to matter and Scorpio through its rulership by Uranus, rules by its reversal of the wheel wherein soul values are accepted and lived  both signs are signs of power and domination achieved after battled.

Therefore both signs are united by the 4th ray via Mercury, of Harmony through Conflict.

Both signs can be considered associated with the 1st ray as Aries is the natural distributor of the 1st ray and Scorpio rules that greater zodiacal decanate which is associated with Hercules and hence with the 1st ray.

All signs of death and re-birth are associated with the 1st ray.

(MDR NOTE: I think that some of these differences and similarities occur only at certain stages of evolution so I may include little tags indicating the stage of evolution.  I do not plan to be exhaustive and have six categories of evolution for each stage of difference and similarity..)
