Cancer Visions Life in Leo (EA 332)
Cancer
In Comparison With
Leo
1.   The Crab   1.   The Lion
2.   Esoteric Mantram: I build a lighted house and therein dwell.   2.   Esoteric Mantram: I am That and That am I.
3.   Exoteric/Evolutionary Mantram: And the Word Said: Let isolation be the rule and yet the crowd exists.   3.   Exoteric/Evolutionary Mantram: And the Word said: Let other forms exist. I rule because I am..
4.   Quality of Light: The Light within the form   4.   Quality of Light: The Light of the Soul
5.   Element: Water sign   5.   Element: Fire Sign
6.   Cardinal Cross   6.   Fixed Cross
7.   Cancer transmits R3 and R7 constellationally.   7.   Transmits R1 and R5 constellationally.
8.   Secondarily, (assuredly, but not exclusively), Cancer transmits R4 and R6, through the Moon and Neptune—its two planetary rulers on three levels—exoteric, esoteric and hierarchical.   8.   Secondarily, (assuredly, but not exclusively), Leo  transmits R2, R6 and R7 through the ‘Sun’ and the veiled Neptune and Uranus—its unveiled and veiled ruling planets on three levels—exoteric, esoteric and hierarchical.
9.   Color: violet   9.   Color: orange
10.   Creative Hierarchy number V (unmanifested) Mass Life, Veiling the Christ   10.   Creative Hierarchy number I (manifested), and VI of the twelve. Divine Flames, Divine Lives
11.   Cancer has no specific relation to the first three initiations. Since Neptune (inducing love and inclusive idealism) is so important at the second initiation (EA 71, 297-298), Cancer must be implicated. After the third initiation, the Cancerian can become “the Crab, who clears the ocean of matter which flows around the soul of man” (EA 62) In subtle ways Cancer must be related to the fourth (EA 218) and eighth initiations (relating to unmanifested Hierarchy V—eighth from below).   11.   Associated with the Self-orienting first, the ‘solar-hearted’ second, (EA 298), the soul-dominant third and blazingly revelatory fifth initiations, and perhaps the consummately glorious seventh—all powerfully Sun-like. Especially the first and fifth are involved with Leo—the first giving entrance to the Fifth Kingdom and the fifth, by numerical affinity, can be seen as stimulated by the fifth sign.
12.   Cancer can be reasonably associated with the protective and nourishment-giving centers in the breasts and, particularly, with the instinctual, bi-polar, emotionally sensitive solar plexus center. The disease, cancer, is strongly associated with a disturbed, congested solar plexus; the sign and the disease are, in fact, related. The sacral center (involved in form-building) cannot be ignored. The chakras in the ‘gripping’ hands are related. When Neptune (the esoteric and hierarchical ruler) functions buddhically, the sign Cancer can also be related to the compassionate, humanity-embracing heart center.   12.   Leo can be reasonably associated with the radiating , group-magnetizing heart center (and with the entire head center as well—the crown, the dome which is the organ of the ‘dominating’ soul or Spirit). “Leo within the heart and head shouted aloud and stood whilst Saturn did his work … and thus the twain were one.” (EA431) Leo can influence the solar plexus as one center of focus for the dominant personality (emotionally dominant) which Leo rules. The ajna center is the organ of the integrated (and dominating) personality which is also, generically, ruled by Leo. May not Leo also be associated with the heart center within the head? (Leo is ruled by the Sun; Vulcan may substitute for the Sun; Vulcan rules the “heart of the Sun”; the heart of the Sun works through the heart center within the head.)
13.   The zodiacal signs influence the Monad of every human being (EA 411, 637, TCF 1191); the influence from Gemini makes it possible for the “Brother” who is the “prodigal son” to go forth into a “far country” (as the Monad-in-substantial-immersion), and yet, remain ‘at home’ within the Father’s House as the “elder Brother” Who did not go forth (i.e., as the Monad undiminished upon its own level of consciousness). Thus is the Monad “in the world yet not of the world”. Gemini endows the Monad with its all-pervasive omnipresence relative to the human energy system. “Having pervaded the entire Universe with a fragment of myself, I remain.”   13.   The zodiacal signs influence the Monad of every human being (EA 411, 637, TCF 1191); the influence from Leo preserves within the Monad the will of the King of Shamballa (Who reflects the wills of the planetary and solar Logoi.) Leo makes of the Monad the true center of selfhood, and yet a “relinquished point” (EA 332) in a planetary sphere, the center of which is everywhere—within the planetary ring-pass-not.
14.   Within the Triad—Gemini, the third sign, is related to higher manas (the third aspect of the Triad). Higher manas formulates into abstract thought the revelations of the ‘idea-patterns’ to be found upon the buddhic plane. Gemini, as its dualistic symbol reveals, is also related to the divine love, pure reason and intuitive revelations of buddhi, the second aspect of the Spiritual Triad.   14.   Within the Triad—Leo can be related principally to atma, the spiritual will, as it reflects the will of the “Central Spiritual Sun”—the monadic aspect, whether of man, the planetary Logos or the solar Logos. Since Leo, the second fire sign, is associated with the second ray and with consciousness, it can be related to the revelations of divine love and illumined wisdom emanating from buddhi. The ruler of Leo is the Sun, transmitting the second ray—the ray expressed through buddhi. The fifth ray transmitted through Leo relates it to higher manas.
15.   In relation to the Solar Angel, and the soul-consciousness (and causal body) through which it expresses—Gemini can be seen as governing the pulsations of Solar-Angelic thought and vitality which rhythmically stimulate the personality. Gemini can be associated with the attempt the Solar Angel to ‘communicate’ with the personality.   15.   In relation to the Solar Angel, and the soul-consciousness (and causal body) through which it expresses—Leo is a pervasive and fundamental solar influence. The causal body is a “sun-flower”; soul-consciousness is to the personality as a luminous sun; and the Solar Angel emanates (with respect to our system) from the “heart of the sun”. In a broad sense, Leo can be seen as governing the radiant light, magnetic love, luminous consciousness,  and authoritative power of the Solar Angel which it wills, assertively, to express through the personality.
16.   Within the Personality—Cancer can be identified with the memory and retentiveness of the lower mental nature; with the sensitivity and receptivity of the astral nature; with the de-vitalization or insufficient vitalization of the etheric nature; and, with the tenacity of the physical elemental as it seeks to perpetuate the integrity of its life. In general, Cancer (through the Moon) is especially associated with the dense physical form as a first solar system ‘residue’, and with the fourth or personality elemental (arising from the lesser three). (The vehicular focus and its degree of prominence, depends upon the stage of evolutionary development.)   16.   Within the Personality—Leo can be identified with dominating and imposing attitudes within the lower mental nature; with the dramatic and expressive qualities of the astral nature—Leo is correlated with the astral permanent atom (EA 302); with the prana and natural radiance of the etheric vehicle; and, in general, with the strength of the dense physical vehicle. Leo is related to the integrated personality as a whole. (EA 253, 486, 620) (The vehicular focus and its degree of prominence, depends upon the stage of evolutionary development.)
17.   Stage within a Preliminary Fourfold Meditative Process: Vitalization   17.   Stage within a Preliminary Fourfold Meditative Process: Incarnation, Embodiment
18.   The Crisis of Incarnation characterized by the process/quality of Individualization   18.   The Crisis of the Burning Ground characterized by the process of Liberation (EA 472)

Wider Relationships: Cosmic and Systemic

Wider Relationships: Cosmic and Systemic

Cancer
In Comparison With
Leo
1.   Expressive principally of the third or Intelligence aspect—in relation to matter. (EA 351)The incarnation process under the rulership of Cancer “is initiation into the creative third aspect, the matter aspect and the world of intelligent activity.” (EH 144) Since ruled by Neptune and related to the Pleiades, Cancer is correlated to buddhi (TCF 1162), and thus, also, is linked to the second aspect of divinity.   1.   Expressive primarily of the second and first aspects of divinity. “Leo is the focal point for the expression of the second aspect, the love-wisdom or consciousness aspect. This, primarily where humanity is concerned.” (EA 194) Leo is also the second fire sign. Its transmission of the first ray connects Leo to the first aspect, and the transmission of the fifth ray, to the first as well as the third.
42.   Cosmically associated primarily with the Pleiades. “Pleiades—Cancer—Venus—Humanity(EA 416)   2.   Strongly associated with Sirius.” Leo, in the cosmic sense (and apart from our solar system altogether) is ruled by Sirius. Sirius is the home of that greater Lodge to which our fifth initiation admits a man and to which it brings him, as a humble disciple.” (EA 299) “The influences of Sirius, three in number, are focussed in Regulus, which is, as you know, a star of the first magnitude and which is frequently called ‘the heart of the Lion’.” (EA 300) “Third Triangle: Sirius—Leo—Jupiter—Hierarchy.” (EA 417) “…Sirius governs Leo.” (EA 299) (also 447 re Sirius, Leo, Uranus and first initiation)
Also cosmically related to the Great Bear. Leo “is also peculiarly susceptible to the influence of that Pointer in the Great Bear which is the nearest to the Pole Star.” (EA196) Leo transmits energy from the Great Bear to Saturn and, thence, Shamballa. (cf. EA 427-428, 435)
3.   Three Constellations Connected (symbolically) with Cancer: a) Ursa Major—the Great Bear; b) Ursa Minor—the Little Bear; c) Argo—the Ship. (LOH 90-92) Another constellation Connected with Cancer is Praesepe—the Beehive.  There are eighty three stars to be found ‘within’ this constellation. (LOH 87-88) Tradition connects both Ursa Major and Minor with “flock(s) of sheep” and “sheepfold(s)”   3.   Three Constellations Connected with Leo: a) Hydra—the Serpent; b) Crater—the Cup; c) Corvus—the Raven (LOH 105-108)

Leo
1.  Neptune is the esoteric and hierarchical ruler of Cancer.
1.   Neptune is the veiled esoteric ruler of Leo.
2.   Jupiter is exalted in Cancer.   2.   Jupiter may well be the planet veiled exoterically by the exoteric Sun in Leo. The Sun and Moon are never the true rulers of a sign. (cf. EA 297)

Subtle Relationships Between Rays, Zodiacal and Planetary Energies

Subtle Relationships Between Rays,
Zodiacal and Planetary Energies

Cancer
In Comparison With
Leo
1.   Cancer transmits the third ray constellationally.   1.   Neptune, veiled esoteric ruler of Leo, is the “God of the Waters”, and is associated with the third ray, because “water” is “matter.” (EA 275) Uranus is closely associated with the third ray, and may well transmit this ray as its personality ray. “Two of our planets, the Earth (non-sacred) and Uranus (sacred), are directly the product of this third ray activity.” (EA 200). Jupiter answers to Jupiter . Jupiter transmits the threefold energies of the Sun, exoterically. (cf. EA 297) In this case, Jupiter is related to the third aspect of the Sun’s energy. These are oblique references. In general , Leo, is not much related to the third ray.
2.   Cancer transmits the seventh ray constellationally. Cancer is also the seventh sign if one numbers by polarities (Aries-Libra, Taurus-Scorpio, etc.), and thus has a further resonance with the seventh ray.   2.   Uranus is the veiled hierarchical ruler of Leo, and transmits the seventh ray. Just as in the sign Cancer, Jupiter is very important as a possible exoteric planetary ruler of Leo. (cf. EA 297) Jupiter transmits the seventh ray.
3.   Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac on the reversed wheel and, hence, has numerical affinity with the number four and with the fourth ray.   3.   There are no strong representations of the fourth ray in Leo. Only Neptune, the Sun-veiled esoteric ruler, is related to the fourth ray, because it is a ruler of the fourth plane, the buddhic plane. (cf. EA 666) The heart center, ruled by Leo, is however the fourth chakra, and our Sun and its solar system (‘ruling’ Leo) is a system of the fourth order. Also, as the eighth sign on the clockwise wheel, Leo has affinity with the eight of Mercury—the “Messenger at the eighth gate.” Mercury channels the fourth ry.
4.   Cancer is the tenth sign of the zodiac on the clockwise wheel and, hence, has numerical affinity with the number one and with the first ray. This is not a strong representation of the first ray. Only the presence of a generically veiled Vulcan, which could be described as the ‘will asleep in matter’, would bring in the first ray—mostly from the angle of resistance. However, a great first ray power is indicated as latent—inured in matter.   4.   Leo transmits ray one constellationally. Uranus, the Sun-veiled hierarchical ruler of Leo, transmits the first ray monadically. (EPI 421)
5.   The Moon, the exoteric ruler of cancer, transmits the fourth ray.   5.   See # 3 above.
6.   The Moon is closely related to the third ray. (EA 280)   6.   See #1 above.
7.   The Moon is closely related to the seventh ray, through its rulership of the seventh manifested Creative Hierarchy, and its general association with dense physical matter.   7.   See #2 above.
8.   Neptune, the esoteric and hierarchical ruler of Cancer (and exalted, with Jupiter, as well), transmits the sixth ray.   8.   Neptune is the veiled esoteric ruler of Leo and transmits the sixth ray.
9.   Neptune also transmits the second ray, monadically. (EPI 421)   9.   The Sun (veiling an unknown planet) is esoteric, exoteric and hierarchical ruler of Leo, and transmits the second ray through its soul and personality. “It is the ray which governs the ‘personality’ of our solar Logos, if such an expression may be used, and (because it is dual) it indicates both His personality and soul rays,…” (EPI 334) “Leo is the focal point for the expression of the second aspect, the love-wisdom or consciousness aspect. This, primarily where humanity is concerned.” (EA 194) Neptune, the veiled esoteric ruler of Leo, also—though not as powerfully as the sixth—transmits the second ray monadically (EPI 421). Counting from Pisces., Leo is the eighth sign of the zodiac on the clockwise wheel and, hence, has numerical affinity with the Christ (Who is the Exemplar, for humanity, of the second ray). Jupiter, which may be veiled even exoterically by the Sun in Leo, also transmits the second ray. (cf. 297) Uranus, the veiled hierarchical ruler,  is part of a second ray transmission from Sirius, via Pisces, and, also, is most probably the mental body within the manifestation of a great second ray Entity. (EPII 99)
10.   Neptune is associated with the fourth plane, the buddhic plane, and with the energy of buddhi. “”No man begins to coordinate the buddhic vehicle until he comes under the influence of Neptune…. When this happens, his personality horoscope will show this influence as dominant” (TCF 899)   10.   See #3 above.
11.   Neptune, as “God of the Waters” is associated with “matter” and, hence, with the third ray. “Neptune is as you know, the God of the waters, and the term “water” covers many angles of the esoteric wisdom, such as: The whole concept of matter—universal and itemised….” (EA 275)   11.   See #1 above.
12.   Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and transmits the second ray.   12.   See #9 above.
13.   Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and transmits the seventh ray through “ritualistic worship.” (EA 660)   13.   See #2 above.
14.   Jupiter (exalted in Cancer) through its enthusiasm and aspirational nature has defensible connections to the sixth ray.   14.   See #8, above.

This attitude continues to develop and to become emphatic and dynamic (I use these words with intent), leading to the pronounced ego-centric consciousness of the selfish, intelligent man and to the ambitious display of selfish power of the man who desires place and position.” (EA 292) “…consciousness of the dramatic, isolated self…” (EA 306)
27.   Birth in Cancer: Cancer, the ‘birthplace into the life of form,’ the door into physical incarnation. This is the sign in which humanity, as a whole integrated unit, is born, the scene of the emergence of the fourth kingdom in nature. 32.   The life of the Christ from the Cancerian perspective: “The potency of this sign is expressed for us by Christ in the oft misinterpreted words: ‘Other sheep I have which are not of this fold, them also I must bring.’ This refers to the mass consciousness in contradistinction to the initiate consciousness of His disciples. Cancer is a mass sign.   32.   The life of the Christ from the Leonian perspective: “This is the sign of self-conscious identity. This is testified to by Christ in the words He spoke to His disciples: ‘What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his soul?’ or his own centre of self-consciousness—that significant point of attainment which must precede all the more inclusive states of consciousness.” (EA566)

Similarities and Points of Cooperation Between the Influences

 Similarities and Points of Cooperation
Between the Zodiacal Influences

These signs are really polar opposites in many respects, being the archetypal lunar sign Cancer and the archetypal solar sign Leo but they do share in common the factor of being parental and Cancer therefore has much to do with being the mother of the form whereas Leo is father of the spirit and they share together the tendency to define identity.

As with all factors within the human being, the three periodic vehicles which define identity, can be seen as ruled by these two signs.

From one point of view, the aura and substance of each of these vehicles whether personality, soul or monad, can be considered ruled by Cancer whereas the central, radiating, vitalizing life can be seen as ruled by Leo.

In relation to their primary Rays: Leo 1 and Cancer 3, Father and Mother can be seen in relation for mother is the 2nd who becomes the 3rd once the birth of the son occurs and father is ever the first.

They do share an interesting relationship via Neptune – Neptune having far more to do with the solar plexus when related to Cancer and to psychic sensitivity and Neptune being more related to the heart of the Sun when in association with Leo.

Basically Cancer and Leo together rule the relationship between the solar plexus and the heart, which from one perspective is the relationship between the moon and the sun and from another perspective the relationship between lower Neptune and higher Neptune.

There is also an intermediate Neptune phase relating to the two-petalled lotus which could be called the upper solar plexus or the center of transfer.

The monad itself is father/mother in one respect and both Leo and Cancer could be seen as related – this is reinforced by the rulership of Neptune.

Both of these signs are signs of great hardness in one respect for Cancer has a tough outer shell which protectively resists impression and Leo such a strong, out-going radiation that impression can be rebuffed.

At the same time they are signs of amazing sensitivity.

Cancer always has a reputation for sensitivity meaning that the emotional nature is highly sensitized, the feeling nature leading eventually to intuitive sensitivity and Leo strangely, is called, “The sign of sensitivity”, being to the discrimination between the authenticity of Self and everything else – the not self.

Together as well, these two signs rule the process of completion by which spirit and matter are combined. Leo will rule the light of the soul and Cancer the light within the form and these two lights must come together for completion to brought about.

Also father and mother must be in union similarly for the son to be born. In one perspective Leo and Cancer can be considered the sign of the outer mother.

So in short, the differences are marked but the tendency to function ever in relation to each other is also profound for just as Sun and Moon are a pair so are Leo and Cancer.

Missing or Weak Links

Missing or Weak Links Between Cancer and Leo

Only the fifth ray does not form an energy-bridge between Cancer and Leo. The fifth ray is very important in Leo, because the fifth ray so much helps to define the self.

In Cancer, the sign of mass consciousness, perhaps these distinctions are not so emphasized. Leo transmits ray five constellationally.

Further, Leo is the fifth sign of the zodiac on the reversed wheel and, hence, has numerical affinity with the number five and with the fifth ray.
