Cancer
In Comparison With
Virgo
1.   Esoteric Mantram: I build a lighted house and therein dwell.   1.   Esoteric Mantram: I am the Mother and the Child, I, God, I matter am.
Christ in you, the hope of glory.
2.   Exoteric/Evolutionary Mantram: And the Word Said: Let isolation be the rule and yet the crowd exists.   2.   Exoteric/Evolutionary Mantram: And the Word said: Let matter reign.
3.   Quality of Light: The Light within the form   3.   Quality of Light: The blended dual Light.
4.   Element: Water sign   4.   Element: Earth Sign
5.   Cardinal Cross   5.   Mutable or Common Cross
6.   Cancer transmits R3 and R7 constellationally.   6.   Transmits R2 and R6 constellationally
7.   Secondarily, (assuredly, but not exclusively), Cancer transmits R4 and R6, through the Moon and Neptune—its two planetary rulers on three levels—exoteric, esoteric and hierarchical.   7.   Secondarily, (assuredly, but not exclusively) Virgo transmits R4, R4, R6, R1, and R2 through Mercury, the Moon, the veiled Neptune, the veiled Vulcan, and, also, Jupiter—all these are its planetary rulers on three levels—exoteric, esoteric and hierarchical.
8.   Color: violet   8.   Color: yellow (Mercury rulership). Blue-green is an additional reasonable possibility.
9.   Creative Hierarchy number V (unmanifested) Mass Life, Veiling the Christ   9.   Creative Hierarchy number II (manifested) . Divine Builders, Conferring Soul. Burning Sons of Desire
10.   Cancer has no specific relation to the first three initiations. Since Neptune (inducing love and inclusive idealism) is so important at the second initiation (EA 71, 297-298), Cancer must be implicated. After the third initiation, the Cancerian can become “the Crab, who clears the ocean of matter which flows around the soul of man” (EA 62) In subtle ways Cancer must be related to the fourth (EA 218) and eighth initiations (relating to unmanifested Hierarchy V—eighth from below).   10.   Associated with the stages immediately preceding the ‘birthing’, form-regulating first initiation (EA 67, 471); then, with the cleansing, purifying second initiations, and possibly with the decisive, Monad-establishing sixth (introduction to true monadic living)
11.   Cancer can be reasonably associated with the protective and nourishment-giving centers in the breasts and, particularly, with the instinctual, bi-polar, emotionally sensitive solar plexus center. The disease, cancer, is strongly associated with a disturbed, congested solar plexus; the sign and the disease are, in fact, related. The sacral center (involved in form-building) cannot be ignored. The chakras in the ‘gripping’ hands are related. When Neptune (the esoteric and hierarchical ruler) functions buddhically, the sign Cancer can also be related to the compassionate, humanity-embracing heart center.

11.   Virgo can be reasonably understood as influencing, particularly, the cherishing, patient, maternally-loving heart center (through the second ray), and the persistently devoted solar plexus center (through the sixth). In addition to its influence upon a number of smaller, sub-diaphragmatic centers associated with the solar plexus, Virgo must have an influence upon the ajna center—as an organ of discrimination and discernment. The mysteries of generation are ruled by the Moon, which rules Virgo esoterically; a sacral center association is, thereby, reasonable. The six of the sacral center leads to the twelve of the heart.

12.   The zodiacal signs influence the Monad of every human being (EA 411, 637, TCF 1191); the influence from Gemini makes it possible for the “Brother” who is the “prodigal son” to go forth into a “far country” (as the Monad-in-substantial-immersion), and yet, remain ‘at home’ within the Father’s House as the “elder Brother” Who did not go forth (i.e., as the Monad undiminished upon its own level of consciousness). Thus is the Monad “in the world yet not of the world”. Gemini endows the Monad with its all-pervasive omnipresence relative to the human energy system. “Having pervaded the entire Universe with a fragment of myself, I remain.”   12.   The zodiacal signs influence the Monad of every human being (EA 411, 637, TCF 1191); the influence from Virgo is powerful in monadic life because the second manifested Creative Hierarchy (Who are the “prototypes of the Monads”—TCF 1197) are ruled by Virgo and its hierarchical ruler, Jupiter. One motivation of the descending Monad is the perfection of matter (in this case, the substance of the first solar system). With this mission, Virgo is intimately concerned.
13.   Within the Triad—Gemini, the third sign, is related to higher manas (the third aspect of the Triad). Higher manas formulates into abstract thought the revelations of the ‘idea-patterns’ to be found upon the buddhic plane. Gemini, as its dualistic symbol reveals, is also related to the divine love, pure reason and intuitive revelations of buddhi, the second aspect of the Spiritual Triad.   13.   Within the Triad—Virgo ( esoterically ruled in part by Neptune, and hierarchically by second ray Jupiter, and transmitting, itself, the second ray), is related primarily to buddhi (the second aspect of the Triad), bestowing as it does the second ray and a higher correspondence to “mother love”—a divine, maternal compassion. Virgo is also associated with the third ray, and the third divine aspect, and hence, even if indirectly, with higher manas, the third triadal aspect.
14.   In relation to the Solar Angel, and the soul-consciousness (and causal body) through which it expresses—Gemini can be seen as governing the pulsations of Solar-Angelic thought and vitality which rhythmically stimulate the personality. Gemini can be associated with the attempt the Solar Angel to ‘communicate’ with the personality.   14.   In relation to the Solar Angel, and the soul-consciousness (and causal body) through which it expresses—Virgo, like Cancer, can be seen in the ‘mother’ role—with Virgo providing a nurturing and discriminatively cleansing energy, utilized by the Solar Angel to improve the quality of its personality manifestation. Virgo, as the Solar Angel expresses it, is the will to manifest love intelligently through matter, until the Christ energy pours successfully through the personality-form and a relative perfection is reached.
15.   Within the Personality—Cancer can be identified with the memory and retentiveness of the lower mental nature; with the sensitivity and receptivity of the astral nature; with the de-vitalization or insufficient vitalization of the etheric nature; and, with the tenacity of the physical elemental as it seeks to perpetuate the integrity of its life. In general, Cancer (through the Moon) is especially associated with the dense physical form as a first solar system ‘residue’, and with the fourth or personality elemental (arising from the lesser three). (The vehicular focus and its degree of prominence, depends upon the stage of evolutionary development.)   15.   Within the Personality—Virgo can be identified with the discriminative, analytical, and selective processes of the lower mental nature; with the cleansing and purification of the astral nature; with the magnetic purity of the etheric nature; with the general health and nutrition and of the dense physical vehicle. Virgo, via the Moon, is particularly related to the dense physical vehicle and to all personality substance as a whole. (EA 194) (The vehicular focus and its degree of prominence, depends upon the stage of evolutionary development.)
16.   Stage within a Preliminary Fourfold Meditative Process: Incarnation, Embodiment   16.   Stage of Meditative Consciousness: Illumination. “Scorpio—Illumination—The soul triumphs. Experience in Taurus consummated. Astral glamour dissipated. Soul light pours in. The Path of Discipleship. The Disciple.” (EA 228-229)
17.   The Crisis of Incarnation characterized by the process/quality of Individualization   17.   The Crisis of the Birthplace characterized by the process/quality of Initiation

Cancer
In Comparison With
Virgo
1.   Expressive principally of the third or Intelligence aspect—in relation to matter. (EA 351).  The incarnation process under the rulership of Cancer “is initiation into the creative third aspect, the matter aspect and the world of intelligent activity.” (EH 144) Since ruled by Neptune and related to the Pleiades, Cancer is correlated to buddhi (TCF 1162), and thus, also, is linked to the second aspect of divinity.   1.   Expressive of both the second and third aspects of divinity, but especially well-rooted in the third. “Virgo is the focal point for the expression of the third aspect, that of active intelligence. In that sign the highest function of matter is symbolised.” (EA 194, also 280)
2.   Cosmically associated primarily with the Pleiades. “Pleiades—Cancer—Venus—Humanity(EA 416)   2.   Cosmically associated principally with the Pleiades. “One of the most esoteric cycles is based upon certain conjunctions and respective positions of Virgo and the Pleiades.” (EA 657) “Virgo is inseparable from Leo and the Pleiades and the Hyades.” (EA 679) Virgo is related to several feminine constellations which figure importantly in the astrology of the form. “There is Cassiopea, Venus, Coma Berenice, Andromeda and one or two others, as well as Virgo, the Virgin, the most important of them all.” (EA 400)
3.   Three Constellations Connected (symbolically) with Cancer: a) Ursa Major—the Great Bear; b) Ursa Minor—the Little Bear; c) Argo—the Ship. (LOH 90-92) Another constellation Connected with Cancer is Praesepe—the Beehive.  There are eighty three stars to be found ‘within’ this constellation. (LOH 87-88) Tradition connects both Ursa Major and Minor with “flock(s) of sheep” and “sheepfold(s)”   3.   Three Constellations Connected with Virgo: a) Coma Berenice—the Mother of the Form Only; b) The Centaur—Half Man/Half Horse; c) Bootes—the One Who is Coming (LOH 120)

1.   The Moon is the exoteric ruler of Cancer.
1.   The Moon is the esoteric ruler of Virgo.
2.   Neptune is the esoteric and hierarchical ruler of Cancer.   2.   Neptune is a veiled esoteric ruler of Virgo—veiled by the Moon. Neptune is also in detriment in Virgo. (EA 171)

Subtle Relationships Between Rays, Zodiacal and Planetary Energies

Subtle Relationships Between Rays,
Zodiacal and Planetary Energies

Cancer
In Comparison With
Virgo
1.   Cancer transmits the third ray constellationally.   1.   Virgo (the second oldest of the constellations) is associated with the third ray—the ray of the previous solar system. This was the solar system with the emphasis upon matter. “Let matter reign.” Mercury, the exoteric ruler of Virgo, and also exalted in this sign,  has a close relation to the third ray. (EA 280). The Moon is anciently related to the third ray, being associated with dense physical “matter” and with the Moon Chain and the first solar system in which the third ray was dominant. Neptune, veiled esoteric ruler, is also with the third ray through its associations with the “waters” which are “matter.” (EA 666, 275)
2.   Cancer transmits the seventh ray constellationally. Cancer is also the seventh sign if one numbers by polarities (Aries-Libra, Taurus-Scorpio, etc.), and thus has a further resonance with the seventh ray.   2.   Jupiter, the hierarchical ruler of Virgo, transmits the seventh ray through its association with “ritual” and “ritualistic worship.” (EA 648, 660) It is hard to conceive that Virgo, as a constellation, has no relation to the seventh ray because of the traits demonstrated by so many Virgoan individuals. In any case, Virgo is the ruler of the seventh Creative Hierarchy (if the unmanifested Hierarchies are included in the numbering). The Moon (the veiling esoteric ruler)  is also associated with the seventh ray, through its rulership of the seventh manifested Creative Hierarchy and its rulership of the dense part of the seventh plane.
3.   Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac on the reversed wheel and, hence, has numerical affinity with the number four and with the fourth ray.   3.   The Moon is the esoteric ruler of Virgo, and transmits the fourth ray. Vulcan, a veiled esoteric ruler in Virgo, has a close relation to the number four—to the fourth kingdom (the Human Kingdom), the fourth kingdom from the human (the Mineral Kingdom) and to the fourth initiation, and may be involved in a fourth ray transmission through the Moon. (interpret DN 91). Neptune, a veiled esoteric ruler of Virgo,  is associated with the fourth ray through its rulership of the fourth or buddhic plane.
4.   Cancer is the tenth sign of the zodiac on the clockwise wheel and, hence, has numerical affinity with the number one and with the first ray. This is not a strong representation of the first ray. Only the presence of a generically veiled Vulcan, which could be described as the ‘will asleep in matter’, would bring in the first ray—mostly from the angle of resistance. However, a great first ray power is indicated as latent—inured in matter.   4.   Vulcan is a veiled esoteric ruler in Virgo and transmits the first ray.
5.   The Moon, the exoteric ruler of cancer, transmits the fourth ray.   5.
6.   The Moon is closely related to the third ray. (EA 280)   6.
7.   The Moon is closely related to the seventh ray, through its rulership of the seventh manifested Creative Hierarchy, and its general association with dense physical matter.   7.
8.   Neptune, the esoteric and hierarchical ruler of Cancer (and exalted, with Jupiter, as well), transmits the sixth ray.   8.   Virgo transmits the sixth ray constellationally. As well, Virgo is the sixth sign of the zodiac on the reversed wheel and, hence, has numerical affinity with the number six and with the sixth ray. Neptune is a veiled esoteric ruler of Virgo and transmits the sixth ray. Jupiter has a possible connection with the sixth ray through its exoteric rulership of Sagittarius and its enthusiastic, aspirational nature.
9.   Neptune also transmits the second ray, monadically. (EPI 421)   9.   Virgo transmits the second ray constellationally. On the clockwise wheel, Virgo is the eighth sign of the zodiac and, hence, is related to the Christ—Whose number is “eight” (EA 37)—Vulcan, a veiled esoteric ruler of Virgo,  has an association with the second ray, as Vulcan is connected to the “heart of the sun.” (EA 393) Neptune, another veiled esoteric ruler of Virgo, also transmits the second ray monadically. (EPI 421)
10.   Neptune is associated with the fourth plane, the buddhic plane, and with the energy of buddhi. “”No man begins to coordinate the buddhic vehicle until he comes under the influence of Neptune…. When this happens, his personality horoscope will show this influence as dominant” (TCF 899)   10.
11.   Neptune, as “God of the Waters” is associated with “matter” and, hence, with the third ray. “Neptune is as you know, the God of the waters, and the term “water” covers many angles of the esoteric wisdom, such as: The whole concept of matter—universal and itemised….” (EA 275)   11.
12.   Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and transmits the second ray.   12.
14.   Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and transmits the seventh ray through “ritualistic worship.” (EA 660)   13.
14.   Jupiter (exalted in Cancer) through its enthusiasm and aspirational nature has defensible connections to the sixth ray.   14.
15.   There is no strong fifth ray emphasis transmitted through Cancer or its ruling or associated planets. Only if Vulcan is considered as ruling the materialistic Moon, can some fifth ray be inferred, through Vulcan’s association with the condensation, and precipitation of the mineral kingdom.   15.   Mercury has a close relation to the fifth ray, through its relation to the fifth scheme, the fifth round, the fifth race and sub-race. “The fifth race is born under Mercury.” (EA 663). Vulcan has associations with the fifth ray through concretion and the seventh ray, through the mineral kingdom and the principle of rhythm.

Cancer is a mass sign.   22.   The Life of the Christ from a Virgoan Perspective: “The Virgo aspect came into expression in His twelfth year when He said: ‘Wist ye not that I must be about My Father's business,’ thereby indicating the subordination of the form life to the will of the indwelling Christ; this was consummated when ‘divinity descended upon Him’ at the Baptism. Similarities and Points of Cooperation Between the Influences

 Similarities and Points of Cooperation
Between the Zodiacal Influences

Both are preservers

These are two of the most maternal signs in the zodiac and are connected via the rulership by the Moon and Neptune. They both hearken back to the first solar system in which the mother and intelligence were involved, so they are both keenly associated with the intelligence aspect.

This enters Cancer via the 3rd Ray which it transmits and is re-enforced in Virgo by the exoteric rulership of Mercury whereas Cancer is perhaps an even older sign although both are exceedingly ancient.

Cancer has retained its association with the matter aspect and only slightly refers to the Christ force whereas Virgo, while closely related to matter, rules the transition whereby matter comes in relation to the Christ force.

They are both extremely feminine signs, highly receptive and they have much to do with practicality and manifestation although Cancer is a water sign, its 3rd and 7th Rays related directly to the field of manifestation and Virgo, though it has 2nd and 6th Rays transmitted through it, is an earth sign with a strong lunar and Vulcanian connection thereby making manifestation possible.

These are both signs of nurturing though Cancer may be interested simply in the survival of that which it nurtures and Virgo in the upgrading of the quality of that which it nurtures.  The purpose of Cancer is to hold an entity in manifestation and Virgo contributes to this survival with its sense of purification and discrimination, adding to the health of that which survives but Virgo is more related to the preparation of that which survives for the infusion of a higher energy, namely the Christ force.

Both are signs of retirement and a degree of modesty and in both signs, since they are lunar, humility is taught.

They are signs of service and since both are keenly associated with the personality composed of lunar vehicles, they teach the service of the Soul, just as the personality must serve the soul.

Cancer rules the holistic integrity of the three lunar vehicles and Virgo the particularity of the three lunar vehicles.

These signs are related by inducing the performance of humble tasks and in providing a basis through which the light can shine or be demonstrated. Both have a very strong connection to the matter aspect and to the devic forces which mould the hereditary material.

Both have a close connection to the permanent atoms.  Cancer relates to the permanent atoms as retainers of the past and Virgo to the permanent atoms as discriminative builders of the present vehicles. Inasmuch as they are related to the 3rd aspect of divinity, Cancer relates to memory and Virgo to the intellectual functions.

Both may be associated with the preservation of tradition and indeed, so often the mother is the agent in the family who is the preserver of tradition. Neither sign is strictly intellectual in that any idea must be seen to express itself through matter and have the capability of manifesting if it is to be considered valuable.

Both of these signs have the care of the matter aspect as their responsibility because the matter aspect is meant to be a foundation upon which the super-structure of the Christ consciousness can be erected.

Virgo also has much to do with the nurturing aspect of the solar angels and when compared with Leo, is often assigned to the soul power whereas Leo is assigned to the power of the personality.

What becomes clear is that all of these different signs and potencies have manifold responsibilities and resonances with many different aspects of the individual constitution. Interestingly enough the fifth creative hierarchy, which is the most recent of the liberated hierarchies, is also much associated with the 10th, which is the hierarchy of solar angels and these solar angels are lords of ceaseless and persevering devotion which correlates greatly with the sign Cancer because they have a very parental role in the raising of the human being from infancy to maturity when the human being can assume the role which the solar angel has long assumed for it.

So we see all these parental signs related: Virgo the Mother, Cancer the Mother and Capricorn the Father – all connected with the solar angels.

In another sense both Virgo and Cancer are related to the matter aspect and so related to the first solar system in which the matter and intelligence aspects were dominant.

They also represent Mulaprakriti or virgin matter which receives  the impregnation of the ideation of spirit. The ideation of spirit comes very much under the influence of Leo or Aries.

Again because Neptune is so important as the esoteric and hierarchical ruler of Cancer and the esoteric ruler of Virgo veiled by the Moon, both of these signs have a great capacity for compassion, albeit an advanced Virgo who can escape from the critical, rationalistic and sometimes destructive lower mental vehicle and enter into the Christ consciousness but Neptune is highly placed and the boundless compassion of the mother is deeply rooted in both of these signs.

Indeed, when one thinks of boundless compassion or boundary-less compassion, Neptune the dissolver  of all boundaries, does come to mind and we come to realize that the highest expression of Virgo is indeed compassion and the Christ consciousness because the hierarchical ruler is Jupiter which represents the fulfillment of the Christ consciousness.

So there is a great benevolence in each of these signs and even Cancer so associated with the 3rd aspect of divinity though Neptune connects with the heart and it is well known in actual practice, that among advanced Cancerians, there is a great maternal and cherishing impulse.

In summary, these two signs are related through the maternal power of compassion, especially the more advanced members of the human race who have these signs powerful in their charts.

Missing or Weak Links

Missing or Weak Links Between Cancer and Virgo

Cancer, in and of itself, is not well-endowed with the fifth ray. If we include decanate sub-signs and rulers, or the transmission from the energies and forces of the three other arms of the Cardinal Cross, all this is changed.

In fact, once such influences are included, there is no sign of the zodiac which does not have access to all the rays. Virgo, of course, has much fifth ray through the power of Mercury.
