and Points of Cooperation
Between the Zodiacal Influences
Both
of these are great power signs and are fixed as well, representing
the fixity of the will. So that great displays of willfulness can
be seen in connection with either sign.
The
first Ray has a natural line of expression through Leo, but if Scorpio,
constellationally speaking, had more than one Ray passing through
it, certainly the 1st Ray would be a strong candidate and the rulership
by Pluto, conveying the 1st Ray and the 1st Ray aspect of Mars,
gives much 1st Ray in association with Scorpio.
The
power nature of the two signs is somewhat different for Leo rules
the power of the individual, the aggregate of forces assembled in
any individuality through the process of evolution and Scorpio represents
the assembled power of the group which on a lower turn of the spiral
is discussed as the money of others, other person's resources. Sometimes
Leo, representing the heart center, can centralize the power of
the group and focus the group power through it.
Again
these are two very different signs, they are both much involved
in the drama of expanding consciousness. Leo expands self-awareness,
especially in the conscious domains - the self, as one knows it
to be under ordinary conditions and metaphorically in the light
of day but the self is a much larger entity and brings with it an
extensive past. This, Scorpio brings to light. Leo rules the reclaiming
of the past and the re-acquaintance of the conscious mind with all
those factors which have long been left behind.
The
purpose of Leo is the revelation of self and self-discovery, but
without Scorpio this process would be incomplete so therefore these
two signs are involved in creating full self-knowledge which must
go to the depths ruled by Pluto in Scorpio and over which Mars has
some dominion and much must rise to the heights or the Crown of
spirit over which Leo holds sway.
The
two of these signs are also involved in the drama of transformation
of self - not just its revelation. Leo in the negative sense, can
hold out for the preservation of a limited royal consciousness -
the master of all it surveys.
The
problem being, the scope of what is surveyed is small. Scorpio destroys
the wall of egoity on several levels - perhaps as many as three
and gives the consciousness a wider point of view and the capability
of identifying with a wider ring-pass-not.
Destruction
via Scorpio will proceed of the Leonian dominant personality, of
the Leonian causal body and perhaps ultimately of the monadic sheath
with which, Leo as the king of spirit, must also be connected.
This
is the process of transformation and represents very much the over-throw
of the king, for the ego no matter what its level of manifestation,
must be called the king. It is here we see the role of exalted Uranus
in Scorpio, the revolutionary who overthrows the centralized position
of any limited ego.
From
another point of view, Scorpio tests and challenges the sense of
identity, for Scorpio is ruled by the rebellious forces of Mars
which control predominantly through the solar plexus and sacral
centers and clearly the base of the spine center is also involved
with Pluto and even Mars.
This
great rebellion of the lower centers confronts the king, the limited
personal ego and its own forces it cannot prevail. It may succeed
for a while in stifling or putting down the rebellion and driving
these forces again into the darkness but it cannot subdue or transmute
these forces.
Only
by spiralling the sense of identity up into the world of unitive
consciousness, the world of the egoic lotus, the causal body (the
world of the soul), can the solar forces prevail over the mobilized
lunar forces which are under the command of Scorpio/Mars and Pluto.
It
must be realised that both Mars and Pluto are to some extent, lunar
planets, being identified preeminently with the energies below the
diaphragm and with the various lunar lords and even with the entire
personality, for the integrated personality is in one respect, as
much a lunar lord as the solar lord and in its lunar aspect it is
ruled by Mars, in its solar aspect by the Sun. Here we find the
personality having the choice of either going in the direction of
Mars and the Moon or going in the direction of love, the heart center
or the solar plexus center.
So
Scorpio stages the rebellion which involves the summoning of the
unregenerate past which challenges the sense of identity to become
larger, more capacious, more heart-felt, more inclusive and in this
case what the Sun usually represents as a center of personality
identity must reach towards what Mercury represents - the higher
illumination, the light of the soul, the knowledge of the soul and
the illusion-dispelling intuition of the buddhic plane.
Later,
at the 4th initiation where the egoic lotus holds sway and the individual
is a rich, young man, radiant, comprehensive, generous in consciousness
and with his gifts, Scorpio stages still another rebellion and demands
the end of even these limitations. Here we have what modern depth
psychologists have called the battle between the conscious and the
unconscious mind and Scorpio It seems to rule not only the unregenerate
past but the invasion of the archetypes.
This is why perhaps, Uranus
the planet of archetypes in their pure form, is exalted in Scorpio.
The archetypes are certainly bigger than any strictly limited consciousness
and even bigger than the limitations of individualised soul-consciousness.
The archetypes could be considered part of the planetary mind and
ultimately even of the solar mind (Uranus let it be remembered,
is a mental planet and is much related to solar life) and when an
individual begins to live according to higher archetypes, which
are larger than the TAPE
NO. 7 ahamkaric
principle and most identities defend themselves against loss of
identity by re-enforcing their walls (whose symbol would be the
mighty fortress - Leo). When living the archetypal life, the limited
individuality takes its place in a much larger individuality and
the archetypes determine the energy that must be passed through
the newly-entering center of consciousness.
The role of transformation
is to make greater energies available to the developing consciousness
- this is of course resisted at first and may be called the repression
of the sublime, the loving of darkness rather than of light. Is
it not interesting that Scorpio, a sign of great darkness, leads
into greater and greater light.
Another similarity, it is said that
Leo is the most human of the signs and certainly Leo governs the
principle of individuality and separation from the mass consciousness,
the principle by which the human animal becomes self-conscious.
Interestingly, Scorpio is the ruler of the human hierarchy, the
hierarchy of human monads. It is said that this human hierarchy,
whose soul ray is the 4th and whose personality Ray is the 5th,
advances contrary to the advancement of the deva kingdom through
destruction. Does it not seem that Scorpio, the destroyer, is identified
with the monadic level of the human hierarchy and hence brings in
the powerful 1st Ray of the destroyer at that high spiritual level.
So we see Scorpio and Leo constantly changing positions. At a certain
point of development, Leo as the dominant, illumined, conscious,
self-directed personality definitely stands superior to the realm
which Scorpio leads. That realm being the realm of the astral plane,
the realm of glamor and illusion just as the heart stands superior
to the solar plexus. Later Scorpio the transformer, upsets the limited
understanding of Leo and widens its life.
There is another very
important connection between Leo and Scorpio via the number 8.
Leo has rulership by the Sun and it is said that Mercury and the
Sun are One. Mercury has been called the guardian of the eighth
gate and is the hierarchical ruler of Scorpio, the eighth sign.
The circulation of the kundalini power, much ruled by both Scorpio
and Mercury, proceeds up the spine in repeated figure eights. Eventually
it produces the total illumination which Leo symbolizes. The purpose
of all duality, is to produce synthesis and unity. Scorpio represents
that aggressive duality which is thorough going in its production
of synthesis and unity - it will accept the impedance of no obstacle.
In many ways, the rising of the kundalini power under Scorpio found
particularly at the time of the 4th initiation when much destruction
is called for, leads to the completing of the antahkarana, ruled
by Mercury. That completion places the Sun totally in control and
no intermediary is needed any longer. Mercury and the Sun are one.
The number eight has become the one. Eight is the Christ force and
the Christ is also King. Through the rising of the energy via the
figure 8, the Christ force is put upon his throne, "I and my
Father are One, Mercury and the Sun are one." So in a sense,
Scorpio initiates all dualistic conflicts which at length crown
the king. Is it not interesting that Scorpio de-thrones the king
in order to truly crown the king and at length the monad, ruled
by Leo, the king of all, stands upon his throne. When one thinks
of the king of kings with respect to this planet, one thinks of
Sanat Kumara who can be seen under the guise of a number of the
signs of the zodiac and probably been given sufficient thought from
all twelve. Certainly he is the King ruled by Leo and he is also
the "youth of endless summers" ruled by Aries and "the
ancient of days", ruled by Capricorn - three of the great first
Ray signs, the ones that form a triangle in fact to distribute 1st
Ray energy into our solar system. In summary, when looking at Leo
and Scorpio, we would say that these are signs of conscious induction
and signs which cooperate in the enthroning of the spiritual will.
They at first, cooperate with the enthroning of the limited personal
ego, then of the higher ego, the Christ self and finally the enthroning
of the kings of kings - the monad as the father/spirit.
It is said
that Scorpio stages the release of Leo and Leo seeks release in
Scorpio. The relationship of these two signs can be described in
the ancient mantram, "Lead us from darkness to light (from
Scorpio to Leo), from the unreal to to the real (from Scorpio to Leo), from death to immortality (from
Scorpio to Leo)."
It is said that the human beings with which
both Leo and Scorpio are identified, are lords of ceaseless and
persevering devotion.
Each of these signs carries a powerful sixth
Ray association. Leo is associated with the sixth creative hierarchy
counting downwards from the 1st liberated hierarchy on the cosmic
astral plane and is esoterically ruled by Neptune veiled by the
Sun. Scorpio is ruled by a double 6th Ray through a double Mars
and has a connection with the astral plane and with the forces of
the solar plexus considered as a great clearing house for the energies
below the diaphragm.
There is great devotion and tenacity in both
of these signs and through their cooperation, the human being becomes
what it essentially is in full glory through a series of deaths
and rebirths, of destructions and resurrections. Certainly Leo represents
the rising Sun out of every situation of Scorpio-induced death.
Both Leo and Scorpio are signs of passion. Fire and water are both
associated with the astral plane as is the number 6 and both signs
have a strong 6th Ray component through their planetary rulers and
their hierarchical placement - in the case of Leo. (I see a lot
of arranging and re-arranging that will have to be done here.)
