1.   Esoteric Mantram: I see the goal. I reach the goal and see another.   1.   Esoteric Mantram: Water of life am I, poured forth for thirsty men.

2.   Exoteric/Evolutionary Mantram: And the Word said: Let food be sought.   2.   Exoteric/Evolutionary Mantram: And the Word said: Let desire in form be ruler.

3.   Quality of Light: A beam of directed, focused Light   3.   Quality of Light: The Light that shines on Earth, across the sea.

6.   Transmits R4, R5 and R6 constellationally

  6.   Transmits R5 constellationally. Secondary and subtle transmissions of R3 (cf. 138) and R1 are possible.

7.   Secondarily, (assuredly, but not exclusively) Sagittarius transmits R2, R3 and R6 through Jupiter, the Earth and Mars—its three planetary rulers on three levels—exoteric, esoteric and hierarchical..

  7.   Secondarily, (assuredly, but not exclusively) Aquarius transmits R7, R2 and R4 (with R1, R6, and R7), through Uranus, Jupiter and the Moon, veiling Vulcan, Neptune and Uranus—all these are its planetary rulers on three levels—exoteric, esoteric and hierarchical.

8.   Color: rich blue

  8.   Color: turquoise

9.   Creative Hierarchy number VI (manifested), the Lunar Lords, or Sacrificial Fires.

  9.   Creative Hierarchy number XII (manifested) and XII of the twelve. Elemental Lives; the Baskets of Nourishment; the Blinded Lives

10.   Associated with the instinct-directing, ‘soul-ward’ orienting, ‘form-abstractive’ first initiation; with the fierily-baptizing, ideal-containing, de-glamorizing, clear-eyed second initiation, and with the direction-choosing, outward-bound, adventuring, nirvanic sixth initiation—the initiation of Decision.

  10.   Association with refuse-flushing, fire-cleansing, fellowship-inducing second initiation; the ego-negating, light-pervading, soul-inspiring third initiation; the personality-renouncing, life-energizing fourth initiation; and, conceivably, with the abundant life of the beneficently organizing fifth degree.

11.   Sagittarius can be reasonably associated with the insistently driving, aspiring, fiery solar plexus center; with the instinctively-hunting, passion-driven sacral center, and even with the center at the base of the spine, where the latent fire (Mars) awaits its rising; Earth (with its first ray Monad and a symbol identical to the fourfold structure of the base center) is the esoteric ruler of Sagittarius, connecting it to that lowest center.  The personality-directing, clear-seeing, force controlling ajna center should also be influenced strongly by Sagittarius, at a relatively high point in the evolutionary process.

11.   Aquarius can be reasonably associated with the entire abundantly-radiating, synthetic crown center, and the united radiation of the chakra centers as a whole. When the ajna center responds to the universal mind, the envisioning of the archetypally-destined future appears. Aquarius transmits the third ray, and thus relates to the throat center (through ruling Saturn, Uranus and Vulcan as well). Aquarius, is esoterically ruled by Jupiter, the planet controlling the group-inclusive heart center. The evolving Aquarian is subject to many emotional highs and lows, thus connecting Aquarius to the solar plexus center. (EA 141-142) Also, through Uranus, with the form-creating sacral center which generates “waters of life” in a more material sense. As well, seventh-ray Uranus is numerically related to the seventh or basal center, bringing Aquarius into the relation.

12.   The zodiacal signs influence the Monad of every human being (EA 411, 637, TCF 1191); the influence from Sagittarius guides the Monad on its descent into material immersion, and, again, through an inherently flawless sense of direction, guides the Monad upon its path of return. Sagittarius contributes to the conviction of “monadic destiny”, and destination.   12.   The zodiacal signs influence the Monad of every human being (EA 411, 637, TCF 1191); the influence from Aquarius governs the large monadic groups or ‘monadic ashrams’, which aggregations exist upon the monadic plane. The universal awareness of the Monad is inspired and enhanced by the Aquarian energy. The Monad is a ‘center of synthesis’ and a ‘center within synthesis’. The Aquarian energy stimulates the universality and synthetic awareness of the Monad.

13.   Within the Triad—Sagittarius is focused in both buddhi and higher manas—the abstract mind. Sagittarius transmits the fourth ray, which relates to the fourth, or buddhic,  plane and the principle of  buddhi.  Sagittarius is one of the intuitive signs. (EA 177) In Sagittarius, intuition (fourth ray, second principle) governs aspiration (sixth ray—which Sagittarius also transmits) (cf. EA 178) Sagittarius is at once philosophical (utilizing the abstract mind) and intuitive. The blend of buddhi and higher manas may be called “universal or spiritual mind” which Sagittarius expresses in relation to Mercury. (EA 369)   13.   Within the Triad—Aquarius is related principally to higher manas and to atma as both of them reflect, to differing degrees, the Universal Mind (EA 241, 322, 495). Aquarius transmits the third ray constellationally (EA 138), and has rulers or sub-rulers which do the same. Aquarius “expresses the universal consciousness of the Great Bear” linking it to atma, in yet another way. The energy of Aquarius, as well, stimulates and blends with buddhi, principally by inducing loving group-cohesion. The Tibetan speaks of “universal love of the truly developed Aquarian.” (EA 136) This is an expression of buddhi.

14.   In relation to the Solar Angel, and the soul-consciousness (and causal body) through which it expresses—Sagittarius can be seen as the will of the Solar Angel to inspire its personality to a state of aspiration through the presentation of an elevating vision of future spiritual possibilities. As well, when the personality errs (as oft it does), Sagittarius represents the ‘guiding beam of light’ which offers a secure sense of spiritual direction—directing, at length, to the mountain of initiation.   14.   In relation to the Solar Angel, and the soul-consciousness (and causal body) through which it expresses—Aquarius represents the dowering of the personality with all super-human, transcendental gifts which the Solar Angel may safely bestow. Aquarius represents the patient service of the Solar Angel to its long-developing personality, and the consequent elevation of the human soul from the human to the super-human state of the fifth kingdom—the Kingdom of Souls. Aquarius rules the generous distribution of beneficent Solar-Angelic radiation to (and through) its personality

15.   Within the Personality—Sagittarius can be identified with the directing, thought-projecting power of the lower mental nature and its eventual responsiveness to intuitive guidance; with the passional and eventual aspirational processes of the astral nature; with the vibrancy and buoyancy of the etheric nature; and with the general tendency to energetic activity of the dense physical nature. Sagittarius is particularly associated with the integrated, one-pointed, disciplic personality.(The vehicular focus and its degree of prominence, depends upon the stage of evolutionary development.)   15.   Within the Personality—Aquarius can be identified with the power to vitalize, unify and synthesize thought, which eventually develops within the lower mental nature; with the cleansing, drying, and eventual distributive radiation of the love-responsive astral nature; with the electric vitalization of the etheric nature; and, in general, with the nervous animation of the dense physical form. Aquarius “is eventually connected with the physical permanent atom.” (EA 302) (The vehicular focus and its degree of prominence, depends upon the stage of evolutionary development.)

1.   Expressive principally of the third aspect of divinity because it is the third fire sign. “From Aries comes cosmic fire; from Sagittarius comes planetary fire; and from Leo comes solar fire; and each of these fires ‘clears the way by burning’ for the expression of the three divine aspects: spirit (Aries), soul (Leo) and body (Sagittarius).” (EA 293) Expressive of the second or consciousness aspect, through its majority of soft-line constellation and planetary rays.

  1.   Expressive, principally, of the third divine aspect “…the third ray expresses itself powerfully through this sign” (EA 138)—strongly connected, however, with both the first and second aspects. “At this time and in a peculiar manner, the initiate-consciousness sees the Hierarchy as primarily energised by life, and by the energy of Aquarius, carrying a hitherto unknown aspect of the life energy of deity.” (R&I 229) Aquarius rules Hierarchy. “…our Hierarchy [is] (an expression of the second aspect of divinity)…” (EA197)

2.   Definite cosmic association with the Pleiades and probably with the Little Bear (particularly Polaris—the Pole Star).  “Pleiades—Gemini/Sagittarius—Mercury” (EA 50) “GeminiSagittariusMercury (which are an expression of the Pleiades) enable the Probationary Disciple to pass on to the Path of Accepted Discipleship.” “…The Pointers; these point to the Pole star which is at this time a major ‘star of direction’.” (EA 195) It should be noted that Sagittarius is a major sign of direction. If Leo and Aries rule the two Pointers, then the third fire sign, Sagittarius, should be connected with Polaris. Also, Sirius, Gemini and Sagittarius probably formed a triangle at the time of man’s individualization. (cf. EA 355) Sagittarius and Betelgeuse are related to the third cosmic path: “Source— Betelgeuse, via the sign Sagittarius.” (EA 1257)

  2.   Strong cosmic association with the Pole Star, Alcyone, also an invisible constellation, and the Great Bear: “The influence which emanates from the Pole Star and which is such a potent factor in our solar system reaches our planet via the sign Aquarius.” (TCF 1263) “Aquarius, Alcyone and Humanity constitute a most interesting triangle of force. Alcyone is one of the seven Pleiades and is called the ‘star of the Individual’ and sometimes the ‘star of intelligence’.” (EA 200) “The source of energy to which they respond may be regarded as the Pole Star.  It should nevertheless be pointed out that this star serves only as a blind for a constellation which lies behind,—a constellation which exists only in etheric matter.  It is consequently ignored by astronomers, though its influence is exceedingly potent within our system.” (TCF 1262) Also, “Aquarius—expresses the universal consciousness of the Great Bear.” (EA 349)

3.   Three Constellations Connected with Sagittarius: a) Lyra—the Seven Stringed Harp; b) Ara—the Altar; c) Draco—the Serpent of Wisdom; also d) Aquila and e) Cygnus

  3.   Three Constellations Connected with Aquarius: a) Pisces Australes—the Southern Fish; b) Pegasus—the Winged Horse; c) Cygnus—The Swan (LOH 189-190)

1.   Jupiter is the exoteric ruler of Sagittarius

1.   Jupiter is the esoteric ruler of Aquarius.
2.   The Moon is specially related to Sagittarius because this sign with Mars rulers the Lunar Lords.

  3.   No planet is exalted or falls in Aquarius.

Subtle Relationships Between Rays, Zodiacal and Planetary Energies

Subtle Relationships Between Rays,
Zodiacal and Planetary Energies

Sagittarius
In Comparison With
Aquarius
1.   Sagittarius transmits the fourth ray, constellationally. Sagittarius is also the fourth sign on the clockwise wheel, IF numbering begins with Pisces (which the Tibetan does in relation to Leo). This numerical fact reinforces Sagittarius’s relationship to the fourth ray.

  1.   The Moon (hierarchical ruler) is the veiling transmitter of the fourth ray. Moon-veiled Vulcan is closely related to the fourth ray, the fourth kingdom, and the fourth initiation. Neptune ( a Moon-veiled hierarchical ruler) is associated with the fourth ray through its relationship to buddhi, and to the fourth , or buddhic, plane.

2.   Sagittarius transmits the fifth ray constellationally.

  2.   Aquarius transmits the fifth ray constellationally. Uranus, the exoteric ruler, (and a veiled hierarchial rulers) can stand for “exoteric science” (EP 149) and, hence, has fifth ray associations. Saturn, a possible alternative ruler, is associated with the concrete mind and, hence, with the fifth principle. Vulcan, (a veiled hierarchical ruler) relates to the concretion and physical precipitation, as does the fifth ray.

3.   Sagittarius transmits the sixth ray constellationally. Jupiter (through enthusiasm) has sixth ray associations. Mars, hierarchical ruler, transmits the sixth ray.

  3.   Neptune (a Moon-veiled hierarchical ruler) transmits the sixth ray. Enthusiastic Jupiter has a probable connection to the sixth ray.

4.   Sagittarius is the ninth sign of the zodiac on the reversed wheel, hence connected to the third ray by numerical affinity, as the number nine is the number characterizing the cycles of the third ray.

  4.   “The third ray expresses itself powerfully through” Aquarius constellationally. (EA 138). Aquarius is also the third sign of the zodiac on the clock-wise wheel, therefore having numerical affinity with the third ray. Uranus transmits the third ray (probably through its personality) as does Saturn (considered an alternative ruler in this sign) through its Monad, and probably, also, its soul. The Moon-veiled Uranus also transmits the third ray.

5.   Sagittarius is the fifth sign of the zodiac on the clockwise wheel, and hence has numerical affinity with the fifth ray.

  5.   See #2 above.

6.   Jupiter, the exoteric ruler, transmits the second ray. Earth, esoteric ruler, has a second ray soul and, thus, transmits the second ray.

  6.   Aquarius is the eleventh sign on the reversed wheel. Since eleven sums to two, Aquarius has numerical affinity with the second ray. Jupiter, the esoteric ruler of Aquarius, transmits the second ray. Neptune, a Moon-veiled hierarchical ruler, transmits the second ray monadically. Vulcan (a Moon-veiled hierarchical ruler) is associated with the “heart of the Sun” (EA   ), and Uranus (exoteric ruler) is placed in a line of second ray transmission from Sirius, and participates in the three lower vehicles (probably as the mental body)  of a great second ray Entity (EPII 99)

7.   Jupiter, the exoteric ruler,  transmits the seventh ray, through its association with ritualism. (EA 660)

  7.   Uranus transmits the seventh ray. Saturn has strong seventh ray associations. Jupiter (esoteric ruler) transmits the seventh ray.

8.   Enthusiastic Jupiter, the exoteric ruler, is involved with ritualistic worship, and, hence, can be understood as related to the sixth ray. The twelve petals of the Jupiter-ruled heart center is double-six.

  8.   See #3 above.

9.   Earth, the esoteric ruler of Sagittarius, transmits the third ray through its personality.

  9.   See #4 above.

10.   Earth, the esoteric ruler of Sagittarius, transmits the second ray through its soul.

  10.   See #6 above.

11.   Earth the hierarchical ruler of Sagittarius, transmits the first ray (however weakly) through its Monad.

  11.   Aquarius, itself, may have implicate first ray associations. “Aquarius—expresses the universal consciousness of the Great Bear” (EA 349) The Great Bear (as a whole) transmits the first ray. (cf. TCF 146). Aquarius, is the tenth sign on the reversed wheel, numbering by polarities (Aries-Libra, Taurus-Scorpio, etc.) and thus has numerical resonance with the first ray. Uranus, the exoteric ruler,  transmits the first ray monadically.  (EPI 421) Saturn, a possible alternative ruler in Aquarius, transmits the first ray probably in its personality, but perhaps its soul. (EA 450)  Moon-veiled Vulcan and Uranus both transmit the first ray—the first as the monadic ray, the second, probably, as the soul ray.

12.   Mars, the hierarchical ruler of Sagittarius, transmits the sixth ray.

  12.   See #3 above.

13.   Mars trains “those whose work is along the lines of the destroyer”, hence must be expressive of the first ray.

  13.   See #11 above.

14.   Mars is related to the fifth ray through the five senses and science, which it rules. (EA 215)

  14.   See #2 above.

15.   Mars is related to the third ray through its participation in the manifestation of a great third ray Entity. (EPII 99)

  15.   See #4 above.

16.   Mars (the “God of War”) may be affiliated with the conflict or “lower” side of the fourth ray, just as Venus may be affiliated with the harmony and beauty aspect of this ray. “The relation of the fourth ray to the fourth kingdom in nature (which is the fourth Creative Hierarchy) is a predetermining influence in all world conflict up to date and is the cause which has produced the history  of war and conflict down the ages.” (EA 327-328)

  16.   See #1 above.

Similarities and Points of Cooperation Between the Influences

 Similarities and Points of Cooperation
Between the Zodiacal Influences

A.   Both of these signs are filled with the spirit of discovery via the fifth Ray. Sagittarius discovers through exploration and Aquarius through close examination, the more scientific attitude, though both are willing to venture into new territory due to the powerful Jupiter rulerships esoterically in Aquarius and exoterically in Sagittarius.

So enlargement is a major theme for both and a widening of the experience.

There is clearly an experimental attitude found in both, the experimental scientist is found particularly in Aquarius and under the undeveloped man of Sagittarius, experimental approach is listed. This may point to the Sagittarian willingness to try the untried and to see what happens -- though perhaps more careful experimentation is more definitely found in Aquarius.

B.   One of the factors which most unites these signs is their futurism, their anticipation of a better way, their orientation towards the ideal. Perhaps the ideal is likely to be seen in more metaphysical terms in the case of the Sagittarian, but there is an instinctive belief that a better way lies ahead.

And both signs share a powerful optimism unlike the contrast between Sagittarius and Capricorn. Clearly the new and better way is anticipated. Aquarius always produces utopianists and perhaps the Sagittarian is more likely to look for utopia in heaven and the Aquarius with its more powerful seventh Ray, upon the earth, but a better way is always envisioned.

And envisioning is another quality of the two signs, the ability to see ahead prophetically of that which must be and will be. The Aquarian perhaps is likely to manifest the vision with greater ease.

C.   So both of these signs give an expanded point of view and are more likely to be progressive than conservative, though there are certain types of Sagittarians affected powerfully by the sixth Ray who look backward to the testimony of history. Rarely is strict conservatism found in Aquarius unless the sixth Ray is dominating from another point of view.

D.   Both of these signs as well have an affiliation with the third Ray, Aquarius because it is the third sign clockwise from Aries and Sagittarius through its connection with the Earth and also with the third sign Gemini.

Therefore, the realm of the higher mind is a field of experience and expression for both. The philosophical attitude clearly ties Sagittarius to the higher mind, the higher manus and Aquarian universalism ties this sign to all aspects of the higher triad but very much to higher manus where the plan is known and the means of manifestation understood. Hierarchy itself is the custodian of the plan and is ruled by Aquarius.

Interestingly enough, the egoic lotus upon the higher levels of the mental plane, the higher manasic plane has in its radiatory influence, a strongly Aquarian note. When Sagittarius widens out, both of these signs have a strong relation to broad mindedness and a spirit of universality.

Both signs are associated with bounty and abundance. Indeed it is the goal of the hunter, Sagittarius, to find that which fulfills desire. And Aquarius from one point of view can represent the cornucopia, abundance realized and made available for humanity. Christ's intention that humanity is to have life more abundantly is an Aquarian intention.

E.      The third Ray connects both of these signs to nature and a pure appreciation of nature is found powerfully in natives of both signs. Sagittarius loves the life of exploration, the outdoor life, the free life and Aquarius is keyed into the beauties of nature and sensitive to all manner of nature spirits and to the cycles and the seasons.

Interestingly the two signs have a strong lunar connection since Sagittarius rules the Lunar lords as the sixth Creative Hierarchy, the sixth manifested Hierarchy and Aquarius is ruled hierarchically by the Moon representing the elemental lives, lives which are obviously present in all natural phenomena.

F.      The two signs are strongly connected in making animal man into a full human being and eventually a super human being, for Aquarius is indeed a human sign and is the archetype of what man is to become, the world server. Sagittarius represents the animal part of man which must be uplifted and Aquarius, the reward of that upliftment.

G.   Both equally are involved in the telepathic process.

J.       There is much physicality in these two signs for Sagittarius is definitely involved in the prana of the physical body and with the exercise of the physical body and the improvement of its vitality.

We recall the three fire signs each associated with the three periodic vehicles, Sagittarius being associated with the physical nature and the outdoor free and easy strenuous attitude of the Sagittarian makes for many healthy Sagittarian physical specimens. Aquarius equally is a sign associated with the etheric body and even with the physical body to a certain extent.

Let us remember that the rulership of Sagittarius is the Earth and Earth is a conductor of earthly prana and is in control, from one point of view, of the spleen which specializes earthly and solar prana.

Aquarius is also a solar sign relating to the Sun and to the life giving solar pranic rays which are transmitted through the etheric body. Aquarius is an etheric indicator, as is Gemini, Aquarius being the third sign clockwise from Aries and therefore the third vehicle or the etheric vehicle.

K.   Aquarius is the healer and much of its healing power goes towards the vitalizing of the etheric vehicle. So the expansive attitude of both the Sagittarian and Aquarian can be fueled by abundant physical energy. Naturally individual cases may vary and we can only speak in terms of generalities.

The individual horoscope will have to be examined and there are many many modifying circumstances, so naturally not all those who have strong Sagittarius and Aquarius in their chart will be excellent vital physical specimens.

Nevertheless, we can see the relationship of these two planets to the Earth and to the earthly vehicle and to the elemental life, for the Moon is in a sense, the ruler of the physical body and the Moon is the hierarchical ruler of Aquarius.

So we see not only the pranic condition of man officiated over by Sagittarius and Aquarius also Gemini, but the physical condition itself, the condition of the dense physical vehicle have much to do with the influence of these two signs.

We have seen the higher mind and the expansive, universal point of view indicated both by Sagittarius and Aquarius and now the reflection of that mental sphere, the etheric and physical body, equally influenced by these two signs.

It is important to realize that whereas the egoic lotus reflects itself in matter in an inverted manner such that the knowledge petals reflect in the mind, the love petals in the astral nature and the sacrifice petals in the etheric nature, it is the reverse when considering the relationship of Spiritual Triad to the personality of man. Namely, that the atmic level will reflect itself in the mind, the buddhic level in the astral nature and the manasic level upon the etheric, physical nature.  And this is the relationship that we are seeing when we look at Sagittarius and Aquarius.

L.      When the futuristic thoughts of these two signs are put together, one may well wonder whether that which is seen can be accomplished. There are many impractical Sagittarians and Aquarians but the higher form of Aquarian can actually manifest that which it sees. These two signs are therefore united in their dreaming and envisioning power and in their idealism.

For let us remember that although the sixth Ray is very powerful in Sagittarius coming through the constellation itself as the major Ray to be distributed and through Mars as the hierarchical ruler, it is not without evidence in Aquarius, for the hierarchical Moon in Aquarius veils principally the planet Neptune, the planet of idealism.

So these two signs are united in their ability to see the new world and their desire to create the new world which of course would be a benefit and a bounty, Jupiter, to all on Earth, Earth ruling Sagittarius and will renovate conditions on Earth closer to the archetype, Uranus, Uranus exoteric ruler of Aquarius.

All this so that the plan, or the divine idea in the mind of God can manifest. Naturally, Capricorn is extremely necessary to carry out this process of manifestation.

M.   There is a very strong ecological consciousness in both the Sagittarian and the Aquarian, the desire to conserve what is beautiful and natural. Sagittarius has what might be called the National Geographic consciousness, the sense of the sacredness of the earth, blending the devoted attitude of Sagittarius with its rulership by the Earth.

And Aquarius is interested in health and right distribution and creating sacredness upon the Earth through the new ideas. But the proper management of Earth's resources are necessary if that sacredness is to be created.

So there is a guardianship of the Earth under these two signs even though Aquarian science under the fifth Ray at other times may seem inimical to this process.
